Title: Snow
Post by: Kpyna on February 12, 2015, 14:37
Man, how do y'all feel about snow? I used to love it, but after getting into two car crashes involving that powdery white stuff, as well as just having 3+ feet on the ground right now, I'm slowly growing to resent it.

Last night me and two other people spent a whole 2 hours trying to get my rear wheel drive out of the snow because it kept sliding around on it, public safety threatened to tow my car at my expense (they wanted to plow, that's why I was moving it), and then I finally get out, and drive it to the other side of campus where I have to walk.

Now I finish my 8 am class and step outside, and thick flakes of snow are falling everywhere, and already sticking to the ground. They're forcing me to move my car back into the lot, although I'm willing to bet tomorrow they're gonna want me to move again, back to the lot in the boonies of campus. And since we're supposed to get a fair amount today, I'm sure I'll be stuck shoveling out my car in the very near future again...

Plus the amount we have has made it impossible to go hiking or walk off of any paved paths because in some parts you will sink beyond your knees...

So, what's the snow situation like in your neck of the woods? Or do you just hate happiness and wish you had as much snow as the east coast has right now?

we get like 1 day of snow a year where i live and it barely even sticks it's so sad

i just wanna play in the snow and do snowball fights and stuff and not go to College because it'll be cancelled because England goes into complete meltdown every time we can so much as smell snow approaching but nope we get nothing.

honestly im fine with it because i dont get out much so ?? it doesnt bother me

the one time it did was when i was on a bus ride when it was a blizzard outside and the bus drivers like "THE RIDE IS GOING TO BE VERY DANGEROUS HAVE A NICE TRIP" and i spent the whole ride just screaming internally and praying the snow would melt and wed be fine

Usually I'm down for a snow day or two, but this year so far I've had 5 days of classes cancelled for snow. It's fun when it's just a couple classes you miss, but it becomes not fun when your professors are trying to make up for missing 4 or so classes by cramming as much material into one lesson as possible... and all having tests on that crammed material all in the same week.

And sylar I know what you're talking about with the bus thing. Used to happen to me all the time when I was in public school. I can recall some times where our bus got stuck and we needed to call a rescue bus... or our bus sliding a little bit past stop lines and red lights.

When it gets a little warmer my friends and I are gonna make an igloo with all the snow though. I wish I could have a snowball fight, but my school will get you in trouble if you throw snow at people.

We had a blizzard last night and it kept me awake until around 5 AM. That blizzard is still happening, university's closed. I think I should care about it more than I do, but I'm too tired.

Quotemy rear wheel drive out of the snow

FWD is the win in these kinds of conditions.

We've had some flurries, but being the British Isles it tends to go as quickly as it arrived. A bit like Carly Rae Jepsen.

tell me about it... unfortunately when you live in snow country they're more valuable and if you're a student, getting one will cost you an arm, leg, and a kidney.

I have never seen snow fall. I've been to the mountains after it snowed, but there wasn't much. Mostly ice.

While on the subject of weather, today will be a nice 32°C on the USA's west coast. Because "winter? What's that?".

In Manchester there's only rain, so when it does snow it just turns to slush and it's horrible. I do like a couple days of really nice snow though, it's fun. :)

man I always seem to miss the snow it's not fair =[

although that being said if we got it here now I'd be expected to shovel it out of the way of the entrances / exits at work rather than get the day off which doesn't sound fun

it snowed like two? ish weeks ago and i had to walk to class in it (ie, more than a mile) and it was in my face and eyes and i was so upset and annoyed because snow in the eyes is not fun

basically snow is great until u have to be out in it and then it is not great. then it is evil in pure, cold white form

Quoteunfortunately when you live in snow country they're more valuable

See, in Europe they're pretty much the norm due to safety legislation. Thought 4x4 would be more valuable. RWD is infinitely more fun though.

For those that aren't aware: The weight of the engine pushes down on the front (driven) wheels, ergo: More traction.

When it belts it down with snow here everything comes to a standstill. If you live in Norway or Finland the temperature is always below 0 degrees (32F for you colonials). In the UK it goes above and below, so a small bit of the snow melts during the day when it's warmer and sinks to the bottom where it freezes during the night when it's colder resulting in the most dangerous ice since Ice Cube was an NWA member.

Snowed over the Beacon and the Malverns a couple of weeks ago. 'Twas nice.

That seriously isn't funny.

Well, i'm almost always out in the cold every day for a good amount of time, and it's taking its toll on me. The snow and ice is melting, so that's nice.

It barely snows here, either. In East Anglia we're protected by some windy stuff and and the sea is all whooooosh so the bad weathers generally stay away (unless it's come from the sea). I have always liked snow as long as I don't have anywhere to go. I like walking through it, then coming home and curling up in bed. But if I have to be somewhere and drive in it, ooooh no.

4WD ftl you just need to know how to control a 2WD P:

not if you're driving in a snow storm unless you think this is a hot look for your car

i wanted to save up a bit more money and then buy a subaru wrx for the 4wd but then my car got smoosed and i wanted to be real careful with money in case they sued me and stuff
(which btw the results came back and my report like flawlessly matched the police report so i was only determined to be 10% at fault which is legally none in my state)

i hate snow i wish guns were legal here so i could shoot it when it happens

i liked it the once or twice we got it after i spent ages living too close to the sea for snow and then in a goddamn mediterranean country but god im so fed up of it. its too cold, its rubbish, my asthma acts up and it melts in the crappy british sun only to refreeze and turn into a Deathtrap Hockey Rink cos the council are usleless and all

britain seems to be shocked that snow is a valid form of precipitation the way we go mad every time it happens and cars all crash into each other all 20 car pileup with a helicopter on top

And we're getting hammered.

The rest of my family just got back from saturday leagues, and my sister decides to say how bad it was over and over again and when I tell her hat I got the idea, my mom yells at me. Yes people, I know how bad the snow and ice is, I fall on it regularly. Although not being able to see the streetlight 50 yards in front of you says a lot.

We have a few hours to go until the next big snow storm hits :s the skies are totally white and gray though.

I guess by the time it hits us we're supposed to get 6-8 inches by the end of today, and another 6 or so on Sunday. Yay. I woke up this morning and heard some crows making a ruckus, so I'm sort of getting hyped for spring.

But snow makes everything so pretty. Unfortunately it's usually to wet here for snow to lie but for the half hour or so that it does before it all turns to slush everything is lovely and sparkly. I love walking home from work when it's dark and snowy vwv

So, not only do we have snow banks here over 10 feet high, and at my house there's snow piled up to my first floor windows, tomorrow there are supposed to be high wind speeds, and a low of -24 F with windchill, or -31 degrees for the rest of the world.

They still haven't sent any word on class being cancelled, but fingers crossed :( I do not want to leave my room in that.

Here in Virginia we dodged the last two winter storms but didn't get so lucky the third time. Now we have 3-4 inches of snow but its the ice that I have problems with. I love snow, always have. The ice is a different story. Its hard and crunchy and makes roads incredibly dangerous. Here in Va people drive like r****ds so yeah. I dont drive yet.

Also, college is closed today and tomorrow. Waiting on news for Thursday.

My state put a warrant out for the arrest of the Groundhog, Pucksatawney Phil for giving us all of that winter.

Across the nation, police have been filing similar requests, popularly against Elsa.

South Carolina police finally caught her... but I don't think putting her in jail is gonna stave off any storms. (http://www.wspa.com/story/28178568/sc-police-arrest-frozens-elsa-in-connection-with-cold-weather)

Most of the big storms moving up from the US have hit us here, in smaller snowfall amounts - but of the five storms to hit, three of them turned to freezing rain. So the banks may only be four to six feet tall, but they're frozen solid and unable to be moved. Main roads are clear now, but sidestreets are in general bad enough that anything short of four-wheel drive is skidding halfway. It certainly doesn't help that our roads are bad and uneven, so the plows are leaving big chunks of snow and ice on them, and the sidewalks are nominally plowed, but rainfall followed  by sudden cold snaps has left them all sheet ice slides.

And when the city is pretty much all hills... it's bad.

But then I remembered you still use the old unit of temperature measurement.
