Title: Death Note is banned in China
Post by: Petzbreeder on July 27, 2015, 14:53
BBC News link (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-trending-33652502).

I've just read that apparently, Death note is banned in China.
I've never read the manga but the anime is one of the best that I've ever seen!

For those who are unfamiliar with it, here (http://deathnote.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page) is a link to the Death Note wiki page.

It was banned in China as there are many themes in Death Note (crime, superstition, the occult) that Chinese people are a little sensitive about. They are also banning other anime/manga for other themes such as violence and porn, among others.

This will effectively mean that more or less, all anime and manga will be banned in China!
I mean, can you honestly name a single anime without such themes as violence or porn in it?

Here is a list of all anime that I've seen:
Dragonball/Z/GT - Violence (and porn in Dragonball)
Elfen Lied - Violence and MASSIVE amounts of gore!
Chobits - Porn
Death Note - Violence (and gore, near the end of the series)
Digimon - Violence (and scenes of torture in the second series)
Pokemon - Violence, they wouldn't be called "Pokemon battles" without it!

What anime have you seen and what themes do they have?

They may as well ban Attack on Titan and Black Butler because of the violence, and blood in the latter. Oh, Fairy Tail as well for violence.

tbf it isn't that outrageous for it to be banned considering the concept of the Death Note.

A lot of those mentioned won't be banned for those themes because it's not extreme in the sense that it won't offend viewers as much, it's all to do with excessive natures and themes. Plus parts can be censored if it's a problem for a portion of the programme (or episodes being cut in fact)

Tbf didn't china ban Doctor Who or something a while ago for including time travel? They seem to ban loads xD

But I guess Death Note makes a lot more sense because it's kinda dark.

China has a gigantic thing about censorship anyway, so this shouldn't come as much of a surprise, especially due to the violence coupled with the occult themes.

certain anime and manga have been banned bc they depict overthrowing the government which the Chinese government don't want their people getting any ideas from

If the Death Note book was real, I'd know who I would write down as victims. Justin Bieber would be one of them.

Really?  That's really messed up, but I guess that's not surprising considering who is saying it.

The fact that you're saying this means that you missed the point of the anime but whatever.  I haven't seen Death Note but I know enough about it to discuss its purpose.

Wanna respond to this now, but you have this awful habit of projecting your disgruntledness onto others.

you're right this is no way to behave in front of the great mao!!!!!

i must uphold the Great Peoples' Spirit (baijiu, lol) in these trying times for the great motherland as it was surely my temporary loss of faith for the peoples spirit that caused the great fall (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2015_Chinese_stock_market_crash)
