Title: V10: Release date decided
Post by: Joeno on November 09, 2009, 18:51
Right, here we go. SMF2 RC2 has been released and it's entered testing in our super secret PKMN.NET labs. We're currently making the necessary tweaks and adjustments locally, but as all looks good it seems like we're going ahead.

v10 is the next generation of our site software, with too many new things to count, some part of which will actually apply to more than us admins as well. It's been waiting for SMF2 RC2 because the new version of the forums software introduces lots of things we want, and part of the reason for the update was to make the site compatible with SMF2.

This Wednesday I'll be doing a proper test of the upgrade and throughout the week we'll be doing tests, fixing bugs and generally polish this new version. Which leads us to the next step, the release time. Assuming no major issues coming up or other delays happening:

PKMN.NET will release version 10 on 14 November. Times are uncertain, and will be scheduled on Wednesday, but it is likely we will take the site down on Saturday, early afternoon, and put stuff back online from the late afternoon to the early evening, with bug fixes and feature adjustments and updates taking place in the evening and on the following Sunday.

We realise downtime is never a nice thing, but this is unavoidable and the advantages here are going to allow us to do everything much better and faster, while also allowing more options for you. We're working on making it as fast as possible, but can't promise anything yet.

Plan for the day

(All times are GMT)

The site and forums will go down around noon. During this time we will be making backups, copying a number of files, upgrade the forums, update settings and install mods.

This is planned to take between 1.5 and 2 hours and so we hope to have the forums back online before 2PM.

Site upgrades and tests will take longer. We may put the site back online while we're fixing items, but this will depend on our progress. If not, it will likely be completely done around 4PM.

Some content upgrades and moves are planned that, due to the availability of staff, will happen either in the evening or else in the subsequent week. Bug fixes and minor updates will also be made in the following few days, in part depending on your feedback.

This, I am very much looking forward to.

Hopefully, it'll blow all our minds. And then put our minds back together.

Great news, can't wait! When the testing time comes around, what would be the best way to report any bugs or glitches we might find?
Title: Re: V10: Release date decided
Post by: Zy on November 09, 2009, 18:59
I'm assuming there will be a "report errors on page" link in the forums as well, while testing happens.
Title: Re: V10: Release date decided
Post by: Joeno on November 09, 2009, 19:03
Testing is done internally as to not give anything away.

For bugs after release, there's the appropriate link on the site, and you can post in the forums for bugs there (but it seems unlikely we'll get many on the forums)
Title: Re: V10: Release date decided
Post by: Trainer Dave on November 09, 2009, 19:21
Sounds very good. I'll be looking forward to this.

Would there be any major changes to the forums occurring? Such as loss of profile data/older threads? (Might be worth me copying some stuff which took more time to create).

But yeah, this is going to be great. Good work.
Title: Re: V10: Release date decided
Post by: Joeno on November 09, 2009, 19:25
We'll be doing a purge in advance to speed up the process (faster upgrades, and probably even for the tests tomorrow). We'll get a backup before we start this, so if something goes wrong little should break.

This sounds excellent. Unfortunately, I'm away at Twickenham watching the England game, but I very much look forward to seeing the new build on Sunday. Just a question: does SMF2 support thread un-subscription?
Title: Re: V10: Release date decided
Post by: Joeno on November 09, 2009, 19:47
Unsubscription? What do you mean with that?
Title: Re: V10: Release date decided
Post by: Lorem Ipsum on November 09, 2009, 19:52
When you post in a topic, it automatically subscribes you to it, so when you click on 'Show new replies to your posts', it allows you to see who has responded to your posts. This can be annoying if you no longer pay attention/are interested in a thread, so people might wish to remove it from the list so you don't get pestered by it anymore. Thing is, this isn't doable at the moment.

^ Surely you can decide on stuff like that via the Notifications and Email section of Profile? I don't get new notifications on replies made to topic I've posted on, or direct replies on points I've made. I only find them when looking back on the topic.

At the moment, it's either 'subscribe to all threads you've ever posted in', or 'don't subscribe to any'. And I don't like doing the latter, it makes me forget threads I've posted in, which is irritating. I just wanted to know if there was any kind of middle ground.
Title: Re: V10: Release date decided
Post by: Joeno on November 09, 2009, 20:08
That list is by design. It's not a subscription list, it's a list of all topics you've replied to that have new replies.

In other words, that's how the list is supposed to work.
Title: Re: V10: Release date decided
Post by: Zy on November 09, 2009, 20:49
So will V10 have Thread (Un)Subscription as opposed to just "Show all replies" ?
Title: Re: V10: Release date decided
Post by: Trainer Dave on November 09, 2009, 20:53
As far as I was aware, the actual subscription/notifications function within your profile has been disabled. If this were to make a better/improved return in SMF2, perhaps it might be enabled? That could resolve the 'Tracking important topics' concern.

...Just a thought.
Title: Re: V10: Release date decided
Post by: Joeno on November 09, 2009, 20:56
No, the current 'Show new replies to your posts' functionality has been disabled.

The thread notification thing in your profile is disabled because it only mails notifications, and those were too frequently marked as spam to be useful at this point. From what I can see, that has not been changed in SMF2.
Title: Re: V10: Release date decided
Post by: Zy on November 09, 2009, 20:57
Ah I see.

But if "Show new replies to your posts" has been disabled, how comes I can still access it and view it?
"Updated Topics" comes up as normal.

Bleh, mistyped what I wanted to say (had long days and all that).

No idea what I meant to say there.

The current functionality has not been changed and will stay where it is, that's what I meant to say. It has not changed.

Hmm... I prefer the old UI. :S SMF 2 seems too flashy, and it has taken away the simplicity of SMF that I loved. Also, the PKMN.NET turquoise and the SMF deep sea blue don't blend.
Title: Re: V10: Release date decided

Yeah, I can't say I'm fond of the new forums. I'd like if they could tweak the colour scheme a bit. At the moment, everything is too Grey and Cream.

I think it looks wonderful. Would prefer the Red before, or even better, some control over the colours when I'm feeling fickle. Either way, thanks for the efforts into making this update, everything is certainly more convenient!
Title: Re: V10: Release date decided
Post by: Trainer Dave on November 14, 2009, 13:51
Hmm... I like the new features and settings, it's quite flashy. Will take a little getting used to.

However, I would say that I think the theme is a little, well, bright. There's a lot of lighter greys and blues and I preferred the 'Mark Read/Reply/Etc' buttons darker - they stand out more.

Also, on the memberlist (http://pkmn.net/forums/index.php?action=mlist), I'm seeing the collumn titles highlighted in a dark blue which makes the text really hard to read.

It's a really nice setup though. Can't wait to see the main site.
Title: Re: V10: Release date decided
Post by: #Emma---# on November 14, 2009, 13:53
Wow, it is pretty different. In a good way I think, although I need to get used to it first xP I think I would like it more if the font was smaller in some places, but I'm not that bothered. The only thing I'm finding a bit strange is when you read the previous posts on the Preview pages when you're writing a new post. The writing in the previous posts is quite small and there is a lot of space in the individual boxes, mainly between the poster name and the actual post. Although again, I am getting used to it now so it doesn't matter that much xP I think it's just because it's not what I'm used to.

I really like the option of making the posting box bigger. If this was possible before (I don't think it was) I didn't notice it xP My internet didn't agree with me when my posts were bigger than the box, but now this has been solved =D And I'm liking what I see so far with the rest of the forums.

I hope the rest of the site comes together just as well as the forums have. Also, thank you to everyone doing the updating! You're doing a great job and it is appreciated =]

The memberlist background colour issue has been fixed.

The precise colour scheme is still under consideration, we need to see whether and what we will do to update things - especially now site builds will be able to change the forum CSS, you will be able to switch them around later.

If you know, v10 of PKMN.NET is out now!
It's got a different feel - more icy and cool with the blue than with the red and yellow.

The site is down with a big

and some to do list.

...but the forums are still here!

IMO, this looks waaaay better than the last site. =)

The memberlist background colour issue has been fixed.

Hmm... It now seems to work a bit better for me while loading, but reverts to the following once the page fully loads and condenses to fit my screen.

Semi Loaded Screenshot (http://i35.tinypic.com/98g9xl.png)
Final page render (http://i34.tinypic.com/b661zs.png)

The format of the headers seems to change when the grey 'Member List' text background appears. Note that this is hitting Ctrl+F5 (Clearing the cache). Using Firefox 3.5.5

Hope that's more helpful...

Not so sure about bright blue/yellow Piplup bit where the rest of the site is linked though..

v10 proper is live now.

Bugfixing - well, this recoding needed to be done, the rest, just don't expect immediate results, it'll be done when it's done.

Set up cronjobs now, put some content in the right places, then we're done, but the big update has now happened at least. Yay!

Feedback welcome on all now. Apologies for present bugs, it's a huge undertaking.

I think its fabulous.  The hard work really shines through, and yet this is the things we can only see, who knows what megawesomecholocatelycoveredfeatures this build will be able to do? -- Remember, the update isn't about all visuals, take v8-v9 there was more expansion then, although I'm not really got the knowledge to talk about this in depth but I'm told there it was more expandable.

Good work guys,  seriously,  awesome work.

Maybe it's because the colours are brighter and more "in your face" in comparison with the red which was nicely calm but a tad dull as well. I can see where she's coming from, but I really like it like this. It's all down to opinion though I guess.

People are entitled to their opinions that matters. I do however, feel you should take in consideration this is the effort of subsitnail hard work, for what, the last 18 months all to make your pkmn.net experience better?

Again, I'm not wanting to put anyone off posting an opinion, I just want you to consider after all this work and effort it might seem a little ungrateful just to write it off as "I don't like it D:".
Title: Re: V10: Release date decided

What Webbz said.

Maybe it's just that I was a little startled in seeing the sudden blue theme instead of the casual red... I thought that this was another April Fool's Joke for a minute, but then I realized it wasn't April.

Personally, I like v9 better, only because of the appearance and the feel of the forums (different buttons? And TWO profiles? Madness.) is what I was used to and what I felt comfortable with... not that you guys don't have taste, but from my point of view, it doesn't really match the site like how it's "supposed" to.

But then again, I whined like this when D/P came out, too.

*PS*

Sorry, Rex. I'll shut up now.  :-X

The little dropdowns at the top make me happy haha.. watching them whizz up and down =D

We get staff profiles now, nifty.. will we be allowed to write those ourselves? It does look a little empty now since I have, er, no responsibilities.. xD

Damn I didn't get these sprites done in time, sorry about that guys :< Shall I carry on doing them or not bother? I've got 2/4 done.

I think I preferred the red colour scheme but the blue and grey is pretty cool too, and all the new features are nifty - looking forward to seeing the Columns in action again. Thanks, guys!

Speaking of Jukebox, I have a question.

Because I joined in mid-2008, I have no clue how the 'jukebox' is supposed to work... I turned on the option in my "profile", and I turned my speakers on, but it's not working. Any help?

I agree...Hide you where this magical 'jukebox', and how does one work it?

There's a checkbox that says "Play Jukebox Do you want us to play some midi music on every page?"

Say yes, (http://pkmn.net/?action=profile&page=siteoptions)

I don't suppose there's any option to change the colours on the top left menu, is there? ^^; Even if it's just greyscale it'd be fine tbh.

I mean instead of Firefox try Opera or Safari.
It may also be something to do with your internet settings.

And my speakers are on and plugged in. I had iTunes playing just fine earlier.

And you couldn't download a different Web Browser?

I tested my own IE - it asked to install some ActiveX contorl by WMP and it doesn't play.

So yeah, problem lies in your browser.

Aargh! What is happened?

This may be because I fear and dislike change (OCD), but the new rounded edges and colors and drop-down-clicky-thingies bother me. Is there a way to make it red again?

PS: I really do appreciate what you guys have done, I just am not a change person. I'll get used to it in time. Thank you admins!

sorry if this is in the wrong place. if it is, it can be moved accordingly.

well, i can't send PMs. the entire page loads, aside from the message box. then a box appears that says something about a bad server and the action was terminated before the screen that says 'windows internet explorer cannot open the web page...' pops up.

That's your computer, it shouldn't do that.

It might be that some CSS hasn't reloaded yet, a forced refresh may help with that.

I had to switch to the red skin for the first few hours- until the Games/Anime/Misc/Forums bars were changed. x__X Bothered me too much. But now they're done, I APPROVE =D

Although PKMN.NET has always been red in my mind... it's still nice. =)-- Also, my font is horribly large in the red skin. =/ It's normal in the blue skin...so... =D;

Forum Profile, Modify Profile, select Buddies/Ignore list.

All of them are there, and not that difficult to find.

One thing.. exactly how is the colour theme determined on this new fangled v.10?
Title: Re: V10: Release date decided
Post by: Joeno on November 17, 2009, 22:50
We've moved from a mod to native SMF functionality, so the dataloss could have happened, yes.

What do you mean with how the colour theme is determined? If you want to switch site builds, I've explained where in my previous post. If that's not what you want, you're going to need to give a more specific explanation.
Title: Re: V10: Release date decided
Post by: q.c.™ on November 17, 2009, 22:53
I meant, are there a hidden set of colour fields that you have in which you input a html type of code?

like:

[ Links | #ffff80 ]
[ Posts | #678901 ]

Or was it just predetermined on the new SMF v.10? Because you have the red layout in there.. so I was just wondering.
Title: Re: V10: Release date decided
Post by: Joeno on November 17, 2009, 23:06
We use CSS files, there's two per build, one for the site as a whole and one with specific forums settings.

We had a package that users could use to develop their own builds for v9, it will appear for v10 later, once we've had the time to create it.

Seems to be going smoothly, this SMF2 stuff, but I believe I've found another little 'bug';

It's not essential, but stats pages in people's profiles appear a bit messed up. Take this one for example (http://pkmn.net/forums/index.php?action=profile;area=statistics;u=1) (Psythor's, only since his user number is 1 ^^). Under posting statistics, the percentages, at least on my end, are out. Especially with "Posting activity by time", it almost looks like the calculation has gone wrong. (Hence the activity figures don't add to 100% the way I see them).

Meh, though it was worth mentioning, just in case it's a simple 'recalculate' button or similar.

Title: Re: V10: Release date decided
Post by: Joeno on November 20, 2009, 22:04
Actually, it makes sense, you're just reading the bars wrong (and I admit it's not very intuitive). The 100% is the time period in which the user (in this case Psythor) has posted the most. The others are how much posts have been made compared to that value.

Most popular boards by activity compares the number of posts he has made compared to the total number of posts in that forum.

Hmm... That doesn't make much sense to me. I'd have expected the bars to account for percentages of the posts made at different times, so like 30% at 5:00, 22% at 6:00, etc. rather than 100% at 5:00 and 80% at 6:00. It's a Percentage of what?

Conversely, the percentages on the other fields looks normal, but the 'pie charts' created don't seem to match the statistics.

Ah, I may be reading this wrongly...

I think it's just as a replacement for the bars on v9 which created a different sort of bar chart. Your highest point on v9 would be 100% on v10. I think that's what it means. So if you were to look at it at a different angle, then it might be clearer to see the comparison. Sorry if I'm wrong here though.

The pie charts sort of match that as well I think, the highest percentage will create the full circle, but that doesn't make it mean 100%, it just represents where you've posted most.
