When I was in bed several nights ago I was thinking of how Your Sprite Art could get one big kick up the bum to get it going again. This would have to include everyone who frequents the board, people who want to learn, people who need motivation and indeed people to be key parts in this big idea machine.
So then I thought and thought hard until I came up with an idea for a big topic for Tutorials made by the site - and for the site. However, this had been done before and I was upset to see it very inactive. Obviously to grab somebodies attention the kind of idea would need plenty of motivation and eye grabbers and whatever can bring the people in well. That's why I asked Blake if I could perhaps take the idea further and make a bigger topic with more links and more order.
Thanks to all of the support from you guys we've managed to get the topic stickied! =]
This is only temporary though, as bigger things are to come for the spriting community! Watch this space and keep on contributing!
(http://pkmn.net/sprites/hgss/male/150.png)F A Q(http://pkmn.net/sprites/hgss/male/151.png)
Q: What is this topic for?
A: I plan for this topic to become a big collection of sprite tutorials from many different members on this site in different categories, including common spriting techniques and even ones that nobody has ever heard of.
Q: Why not just consult that site that everyone links to?
A: This board needs to be brought together by you guys working together. Yes, there are the metagame spriters (who are doing a fantastic job), but this is completely different. There are so many different sprites for you to do here for eachother and for the site. If more people learn how to sprite the board will rocket up in activity so more people can request in your shops, more people can make shops for you to request in, more people can make contests and there are many more ideas.
Q: Doesn't this defeat the purpose of people making spriting schools?
A: Definitely not! Sprite school teachers can refer to this as well as making their own guides. Also, some people may want to be taught one to one by another member and the teachers can give tasks. Once you get into the details, there are so many differences.
Q: How do I get my tutorial onto this page?
A: Easy. Just upload it to a hosting site and the link will be posted on this front page under an appropriate category. If there are too many characters they will be uploaded into a main album that will split into different categories.
Q: How do I give you my link?
A: Post it here or PM me it!
Q: What is the 'Other' Category for?
A: There are categories for the spriting types I see the most often (if there are many of one type of tutorial in 'Other' they will get their own category and vice versa.). The 'Other' category is for the sprites that aren't seen as often as the others but still deserve to have a spot.
Q: I posted my link, why isn't it up?
A: Sometimes, the tutorials will not go up. This is because they are either not working or aren't up to scratch. If they aren't up to scratch, I will PM you and you can choose to improve, make another or just leave it.
Q: There is already a recolour guide, should I post mine?
A: Of course you should! The more the merrier!
Q: If I have any ideas how to improve this topic what should I do?
A: PM me or post it here!

Quick Tips*Always save a sprite as PNG: when you go to save your sprite, save it as a PNG file. This is because it gives your sprite the best quality; if you were to choose JPEG for example, your sprite would become fuzzy and wouldn't look nice no matter how good the sprite!
*Outline shading: Unless you are trying to gain a particular effect, it is good to use darker shades from the body to shade the outlines for the lighter shades. This provides a good range of colours and a bit more depth.
*Get shading to flow with the body: Make the shading of the sprite follow the light source. If the shades don't follow the shape of the body the sprite will not live up to its full potential.
*Find a good contrast of colours: Contrast can sometimes make or break a sprite. Contrast is the difference between two different shading colours. If the contrast is too strong or weak then it can make a sprite unable to live up to its full potential. Finding a good contrast of colours on a sprite can sometimes be hard, but if you follow the next tip you may find it easier.
*Don't be afraid to experiment with your colours: Having the option to create your own colours is something you should take note of! Having the ability to create your own colour means that you can create more shades for your sprites and even your own palettes! If a sprite's contrast of colours isn't working out then you can simply try and find a way out of the mess by editing your colours for a more attractive appearence.
*Save as often as possible: You never know what can happen. Power cuts/etc will have a bad affect on your 4hour pixel masterpiece!

This is an awesome project Liam, and who better to head it?
I'm afraid I don't have a tutorial, but I might make one for this project. I think it's a fantastic idea. <3
I might do a pixel-over tutorial while doing a Metagame Sprite. Talk about multi tasking. ;o

I'm flattered. ;)
Thanks for the support Timmers. A pixel over guide will be fantastic if you make one. =]
I'm currently typing up a basic Mix guide. I have all the images, just stringing them all together now. =)
Great!
Thanks for the help. =]
I have an Inferno guide and a crappy recolour one :>
Recolour (http://i39.tinypic.com/34goj1w.jpg)
Ferno guide (http://i44.tinypic.com/wuqmhy.jpg)
The tutorial can be found here. (http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/4950/tutorialbs.png) Probably terrible. But oh well. Wth text came out tiny. May have to redo it. Uploaded it somewhere else works fine now.
I'll try to do one (or a few, depends how much I write) focusing more on the technical side of things, stuff like neat curves and different shading styles =]
Would you rather these were in text form or image form?
Right guys, gonna upload the guides.
Also hey Kay. A technical guide would be great. =]
Writing is perfectly fine, but would it be okay with you if you put in a few pics for demonstration? That would be fantastic. =)
Jamie: it says 404 not found.
Don't worry, I fixed it. It had a [/url on the end that made it lost. :s
Fixed. Should work now.
Request:
Could somebody make a banner that I could perhaps put in my sig? That would be awesome and I'll get you something in return. =]
May I do a Revamps tutorial?
sniped
Sure! I'll work on the banner now.
Correction: "May I do a revamps tutorial?"
There can many of one subject. :)

Here's the banner, tutorial coming soon.
Argh my eyes! D:
Sorry... That wasn't really what I was looking for. If you decide to try again can you do it over PM? I don't want the topic being clogged up.
OK. And no bright colors that hurt your eyes.
Here's the tutorial. (http://i40.tinypic.com/n7ly.gif)

Yes there was in the episode 'The Ghost of Maiden's Peak'.
Ash sent out Squirtle and Bulbasaur against the talking Gastly
and the Gastly created an Illusion of their evolved forms Venusaur and Blastiose and and fused them together to make Venustoise. It was and illusion though not a real Pokemon.

u leik? and the gif thing is missing a frame, but it's an unimportant frame. But watevs.
Great to see someone's putting so much contribution into this project. I may as well help out with this by reposting my gradient shading tutorial (http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2010/086/3/c/Gradient_Shading_Tutorial_by_AylaBlackStatic.png), then.
Yes, PNG is PwNaGe, but GIF is Great for F(ph)otoshop
Because Photoshop gives you the ability to *gasp* give you different indexed versions of Gifs! :o
but most people don't have PS.
(Quick note, they gave photoshop out with the tablet I bought, so I technically got it for free!)
^There's also a technique in photoshop you can use called "Save For Web". You can select the best PNG option (png 128 dithered or something like that), and tick a transparency box. That way, you don't even need Iaza to transparentise your pic.
Not really a sprite-y thing, but it applies for photoshop users who want to transparentise a pic more easilly.
^saving a pic w/ transparent background as a PNG works fine for me. i've never had to use the save for web option
each to there own i guess

Blake also deserves a lot of credit for starting this up initially. It's great to see that Liam has took it on so it can expand and become very useful to the current and future spriting community.
If I ever get chance, I might write up a tutorial, probably for a pixel over, unless someone else would rather do it? I've got quite a bit on my plate at the moment so it probably will take me a while to do.
just like before, have a trainer sprite tut (http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii286/Shiny_Pikachu/othertut.png)
Thanks for the support guys! =]
Gonna add some tutorials in a sec.
mspaint tut (http://two.xthost.info/blake/mspaintut.png)
as promised, mspaint tut. clicky
Added to the front page.
Gonna have to make a Photobucket thingy to store these if the character count breaks. =s

Never needed to do that. You can choose different backgrounds. Like transparent, white, etc.
I've just put my ice cream guide up, so if you wanna make some ice cream sprites go and read it. =]
I'm gonna make an animation guide for MS Paint, k?
Sure thing, Tom_ :)

I'm gonna make an animation guide for MS Paint, k?
waaaiiit... you can animate stuff on ms paint?
Well, you can make individual frames of animations in Paint and then use Iaza to put the frames together in an animation... that's how Cora made her animated scratches when we got bored in 6th Form. xD
That's the only method I know of, anyway.
ms gif animator is quite good. doesn't give many options, but provides enough to make simple animations, as well as transparency.
I've made a colouring book Pokémon guide (http://www.majhost.com/gallery/Flappy/pokemon/Sprites/guide.png) I'd rather you read it before adding it, just incase it's not what you're looking for.
Come on guys, contribute anything you can! Tutorials, art work for the front page or even sections I can write about!
There's no way I'm letting this die!
If you'd like, I could make a guide on Tangoeds
(http://www.majhost.com/gallery/Flappy/pokemon/Sprites/greentandoedsentret.png)
That's an example there for you.
hmm, care to explain the idea behind the sprite?
If you remember the old Tango adverts, they drenched people in Tango. I wanted to recreate the effect, but more extreme and on Pokémon. I did the original one of these sprites when I was messing around with paint and a R/B Squirtle. I thought it looked cool, so I made more. It's basically just a recolour that's just different shade of the same colour using Paint to get the colours.
Could you make a small sample for a guide and I'll add it if it looks good.
I have an idea. A guide for paint on windows 7. It is different to the old paint. I can't write it myself because my internet is playing up and I can't upload anything.
Could you have a go when your internet is working? That idea sounds awesome. :)
If you can't do so, will anybody else be willing to do so?
There is no chance of me doing it any time soon. I would make one if I could.
Kicked the modem and it is now working properly. What is the best site to upload picuters? I have made it.
Umm, I don't know if there is a 'best' one seeing as I usually use photobucket.
finally got a chance to upload it I hope it is ok

Cheers Moon Chaser. Should I just put it down as a basic guide? =]
Put it down as what you think is suitable.
Added. =]
Come on guys. Anything is helpful; comments, guides, art, suggestions for the front page! ^.^
I'm just about to start on the Tangoeds guide. Sorry it's been so long, I kept forgetting.

I'll add it under the tech-side guides. =]
After I'm doing the pixel over I'm doing now, I'll start a new one and do a guide for it whilst doing it. Might give info on the styles of shading as well if you want?
That would be absolutely fantastic, my friend. :)
Can I request a tutorial? I'd like a guide on how to make a metagame sprite.

I don't know if I'm that good at them, but I could write a guide about football (World Cup) shirt pokemon or celebrity/pokemon mixes if you like.
Sorry I haven't done the pixel over one yet, had exams and all that. Expect it to be done soon though, if it's not then I'll have to apologise again =P

Metagame Spriting tutorial (http://www.deviantart.com/download/167430082/Metaspriting_Tutotial_by_Dragonpika.png)
Errr it's a massive image, be warned.
But yes. Enjoy! It can easily be generalised to spriting as a whole.
EDIT: DAMNIT I DIDN'T MENTION TAPERING I knew I'd forget something D: there wasn't really much tapering to do in this sprite.. so a final tip: any bits of lineart that stick into your sprite (like the crease between Bidoof's ear and head) will look better if you make blend the tips of the line into the body using shadow. Peace out man.
Hmm, is it still worth be doing a guide because Kay's is awesome and way better than mine will be?
Course it is - you undoubtedly do things differently to me! ^^; go ahead!
Sorry, Alex, I know you said you were doing one but I didn't realise that until after I'd made it.. I didn't actually make it to post here, I made it FOR someone and just posted it here as an afterthought =C didn't mean to butt in D:
-bakes you a cake to make up for it?- ;o;
It'll be great to have a few different references for this, I say go for it!
Go for it Webbz! =]
If you read the first post you'll notice I'm welcoming more than one of each guide.
Also Kay, that's bloody fantastic. ;__;

I requested that guide, sorry for causing all the confusion! :'(

NEWS:
I've added an extra section to the front post. Quick tips. They're just quick-glance reminders of what you can do to improve your spriting skills. I'd appreciate if you could take a look and suggest any more. =]
Ideas, sprites, comments and tutorials are all VERY welcome!
[19:14] <Gurren_Lagann> quick tips for the sprite tutorial topic:
[19:14] <Gurren_Lagann> get shading to flow with the body
[19:14] <Gurren_Lagann> find an appealing contrast
[19:14] <Gurren_Lagann> don't be afraid to experiment with colours
These were taught to me by people and they are very useful as quick tips. The first one makes the sprite in general look much more appealing because whilst it retains a direction of light it makes it look more natural. The second is something I sometimes struggle with and often change a lot because getting it wrong makes the sprite look unattractive. The third is because using new colours can make a big different as they can help to get a good contrast or a new colour scheme which could improve a sprite greatly; especially where you need more new colours for it.
Tips have been noted and added.
Thanks webbz. =]

I've got two good sprites here. Sorry about the non-transparent backgrounds, I'm too lazy to do them right now.

ummm, i tried a devamp tut, but i think i failed...
Right here (http://www.iaza.com/work/100811C/Tutorial19989.PNG).
as for favorite sprites...

After much time; here's the pixel over guide I've done:
http://i37.tinypic.com/8ydt06.png (http://i37.tinypic.com/8ydt06.png)
If you want more explanations on it (like Kays because I recall hers going into such detail) then it'd be no trouble to add more; I've got the main images in so it'll be okay).
Also, on the quick tips there should be something on the eraser trick (in short it's a quick way of recolouring; have the old colour as the main colour and the new, wanted colour as the second colour and erase over the old colour) on the quick tips front page.
There is an eraser trick guide on the tech-side... May look into adding it as a tip anyway.
Thanks for the guides, guys. =]

yo dawg, i heard you like sprites
glad to see this stickied, good job liam
Ta. =]
I think after I add a couple more sprites that'll be enough... so no more unless you're somehow absoluetely desperate to send me your sprites.
The reason I don't need too many sprites is because there will be a whole section on spriting (tutorials, metagame spriters, the resource) if all goes according to me and Mike's talk on irc. This means that the tutorials won't be restricted to this topic because there will be lots of pages of spriting goodness.
8)
Oh wow; that'd be awesome in general for the board. I know we all wanted to see it liven up again and this project (alongside the Metagame Spriters revival) has really done that, so well done everyone. It's wonderful to see and I hope this spriting section comes about =]
Ooh sticky!
Uh, for tech side, mind If I do a PAINT.net and/or photoshop one?
I could make a Shadow Pokemon guide if you want.
I can possibly make a neon guide.
Those would be excellent. =]
......I'm going to assume you were talking to both of us. Working on it~ EDIT: I finished. Please dont kill me if it isnt too good of a guide ;~;. First time doing something like this. http://i942.photobucket.com/albums/ad262/Magmorspriter/guide.png
That's a good guide. I'll add it after I finish a couple of things =]
At Roxxy's suggestion, I made a guide to make buttons. It's in two parts, one for the Template, and one for the actual button making.
Part 1 (http://www.iaza.com/work/100816C/Part_1PNG89736.png)
Part 2 (http://www.iaza.com/work/100816C/Part_238411.png)
Just BTW, I made a devamps tutorial and posted it sometime ago...
Hmm... I'd prefer if it were in one whole guide, but I'll take a look and see what I'll do. :)
Well, Part 1 is just making a template. Part 2 is using the already made template to make a button. That way, if someone made a template, they don't have to go through that part of the tutorial again when making a button.
OK Paint.net won't work on my computer and photoshop tutorial is outdated (I have old photoshop).
So I'll make a psychedelic guide
Any more guides? :D
Sprite board hasn't been posted in for ages! We're so lazy.
I can see if I can make a Shadow Pokemon guide. If I can get off my butt and work for once.
Can anyone tell me how to get around the spare white pixels which overlap when I try to construct things separately?

im pretty sure you've already said that ¬_¬
Camzoman: Late reply is late but.. I'm not entirely sure what you mean, but if you're working in Paint, make sure white is set as your background (right-click) colour and that this thing is selected in your toolbar:
makes the white bits transparent =]
A few of my plans for this have gone off the tracks so I'll have to try and sort them out, however, I would really appreciate if you posted more guides for me. :)
can someone tell me if i revamped this persian right? it's my first. i think it was a gold or silver version.

literally knocked this up in a matter of minuites;
http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s33/Wishkah_/Rattatarevamp.png (http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s33/Wishkah_/Rattatarevamp.png)
it's not a great example of a revamp but since i zoomed in, it shows how a revamps done. i think this is from R/B/Y? i'm not the best spriter in the world, as i havent sprited properly for about 4 years. but basically, you need to re do the shading, outlines, etc instead of just recolouring the old sprite with new colours. if that makes sense (: to get the shading just pick a newer sprite with a similiar stance and copy where the highlights/shading is.
so this is the finished product (http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s33/Wishkah_/Rattatatransparent.png)
i feel strange giving crit because im really not even a good spriter anymore im just trying to help out.
All help is good help in here. :)
Unless you tell someone to backflip off a cliff. o-o
Anyway, as Zak has said, make sure you shade the outlines and add extra/edit the shading in appropriate places to make it look more up to date. It's a good start though!
ok thanks! that makes so much sense! i will try that out! thanks for the help! :)
Guys, please submit more tutorials or update ones you've done. A lot of you must have improved over the winter. ;)
The staff are still interested in this. Just needs a bit of shaping up and stuff. :]
Thanks~
I've made some changes to my windows 7 paint guide.

Thanks a lot, Moon Chaser. =]
I don't know if you are still accepting guides, but i might have one... :)

Well, to get your sprite onto here. First you need to upload it to an uploading site =S here's a good, easy one to use called Iaza (http://www.iaza.com/). All you do is upload your picture that you want, then when it has uploaded, click on your image then it should take you to a page with just your sprite on it. Then right click and click on view image info. Then there should be a web address like this: http://www.iaza.com/work/110719C/iaza16652961007300.png next to location. Copy this and then start your post on here and put img /img with [] around each bit. Then paste the address into the middle of that and there you go. If you get stuck i'll help you with it =]
IIRC, images get deleted from iaza after a while so it is good to upload elsewhere if you want them to stick around!
^^
Erm not that I know of. I've used it for a while and my sprites are still up. Could be very wrong though. Hopes I'm not wrong or a lot of work will disappear >.<
They get deleted after about three months. I have to keep uploading my avvy because of that. Photobucket works well for sprites, but I have had a problem with it.

I'll pretend you didn't say thatOh, thanks for clearing that up =] gives me time to sort my sprites out =p
If you do have a problem with photobucket, just delete the pic and upload it agian.
Is there a guide to making something lineless here?
^Apparently not. If it's ok, I would like to attempt to write up a guide. It may take a while due to doing several things at once though.
Lineless, although easy to do in a sense, can stilllook quite nice, so I think it's worth putting up here.
So do I just delete the lines?
Not quite. You REPLACE the lines with the colour of the body part closest to it, usually the darkest shade if I'm correct.
Ok. Can I post my 1st lineliss here to see if I got it?
I'd prefer if you post it elsewhere. P:
^What he said.
I'll start working on that tutorial today.
Can I post twu tuts here?
You can post tutorials here, yes.
OK. I have a tut that I am thinking of making. It'll be up when I can post it.
Here it is:

http://i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff477/kr9q/Tutorial.png (http://i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff477/kr9q/Tutorial.png)

I've done a lineless guide. I hope it's ok.
You beat me to it D= I was working on one. Oh well yours is better than mine. Means I can focus on my shop then. It looks good to me tbh =] Well done.
Anyone like my guide?
It's too small at the moment. Try and get rid of all the white space below the guide.
I put a link too...
I know, but that's too small too.
You can save than bring it up on MS Paint.
But that's not the idea of a tutorial. Tutorials are best if you can just load them up instantly without messing about.
OK. I'll try to fix it.
EDIT:

Chao Tutorial (http://i55.tinypic.com/jszq5j.jpg)
Chao Spritesheet (http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p75/skin888/chaosheet.png)
Hope they're okay =)
I found the writting on the Chao tutorial quite hard to read. The size is fine, but the font seemed to squish the letters together at that size.
Has anyone actually used my guide? LOL.

I have, Gus. It's a great guide.
Oh, thank you. Glad to see I've actually been useful.
Is there a tutorial on how to sprite with GIMP? I just got GIMP and I am just confused. Really confused. If there isn't one, I'll just keep trying to figre it out.
Just stick to paint for spriting. Gimp is only useful spriting wise for outlining pixelovers (using layers) and for making sprites transparent. You can use it for making gifs too but that's quite tricky and i won't explain it here.
Ah, stupid people (on another website) telling me to get GIMP when I van't even use it.
Is Photoshop good to use?
Gimp is good for making graphics like banners and digital art though, just not for spriting.
Gimp is basically a free version of ps but i've never used it for spriting. I honestly wouldn't bother wasting money on photoshop if all you're using it for is spriting.
Like i said just stick to paint for spri es and gimp for more advanced~ stuff.
kk. Sides, I can't afford Photoshot, now that I know that I have to pay for it. I'm broke.
Would anybody seriously be interested in continuing this or even restarting it so that it is more relevant? If you are interested, PM me or post here. :police:
I think to maybe make the thread a little more relevant it could become the 'Sprite tutorials and general advice thread'? So like people come here just for quick advice on a sprite and anyone can respond and help(although this would require the community to actually help, which I for one would). Could make this thread a little more interactive maybe?
I'd definitely think it's worth continuing, I'm sure I could find some time to take over this. It doesn't seem like too much of a time commitment..
I don't mind continuing fronting the project, but, with some help, my ultimate goal still is to try and build up a tutorials section for spriting on the main site as well. I just need to know that the support is there, otherwise there's no point and we'll end up in a similar (or worse) position to what we are in now.
Well I found a guide I made and I don't think I've posted it:
Chao Tutorial (http://i49.tinypic.com/ifzlz5.jpg)
Chao Sprite Sheet (http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p75/skin888/chaosheet.png)
I think that this should be continued, people just need reminding/prompting to create tutorials, maybe there could be a list of tutorials which we most want? This way people will know what to submit and it may cause more submissions?
Sounds like a good idea. The main problem we have is that a lot of people who have contributed to this, and may have been willing to continue to contribute, are now inactive on the forums. Should we keep going with this particular version or do you think it is necessary to re-boot the project and start it (almost) from scratch?
(also thanks for the tutorials. :))
I've been thinking (for such a long time omg) about opening a spriting academy with tutorials in this topic to draw in new spriters c: If anybody would like to help JSM (if you're still going to help me o:) and me teach others, that'd be awesome!
I'd be willing to help with something, but don't have any particular ideas myself.
I'll try and redo my old tuts and i'm up for helping with a sprite academy too!
Cheers guys and gals. :)
