A Stone Gray City
Here, you will get to your first gym match. Heal your Pokemon, and look around a bit. Some of the people will give you some advice. You can take a look in the museum, but you won't get much out of it before you get Cut. So, let's go to the gym!

Strategy: The Jr Trainer shouldn't be too hard to defeat, use trained Pokemon, or just follow the strategies for Brock. Now, Brock will either be easy or very hard. If you started with Squirtle or Bulbasaur, and trained it so that they know an attack of their element, you'll easily make it. A trained Butterfree should help as well, or a Mankey with a fighting attack. If not, then prepare for a long battle. Attack when you can, while trying to lower their defenses. Get your Pokemon to at least Lvl 12. Also, remember that electric attacks will do nothing to the Pokemon.
After you defeat Brock, he will give you your first badge, the Boulder Badge, which slightly raises your Pokemon's Attack and allows Flash to be used anywhere. You also get TM39, Rock Tomb. Now, time to go to the East exit. As you go there, you will be stopped by one of Prof Oak's aides, who will give you Running Shoes. That'll speed up things!

Most of these should be easy. For the last Jigglypuff, try to beat it as soon as possible, because its disable and sing can become very annoying. You can catch a Jigglypuff for Pokedex completion - it can be usable to annoy, but will be hard to train at this point of the game. Further, both Nidorans can be useful at this point in the game, and stay good attackers, although I recommend you keep only one of the two around. Also, catch two Spearows, one for you to train, and one to trade later on in Vermillion City. Heal your Pokemon before you enter Mt Moon. A man will sell you a Magikarp here. There are pros and cons to this - it will give you a water Pokemon right now if you want to train it, but it's a Magikarp, and useless until :L20. After this, enter Mt Moon.
