Vermillion City

Can you solve the problem Ted Rodgers would be proud of?

The Pokemon Fan Club

Now, let's go to get some stuff here first. Go to the building in the north-west of the city first, to get an Old Rod. You'll only catch Magikarp with it, which you could have bought before Mount Moon for 300 more, and have it evolved to the arguably more powerful Gyarados by now, especially when using the Daycare. In the house south of it. Talk to the fanclub owner, and you'll get a bike voucher, which you can exchange for a bike back at the bike shop in Cerulean City. Also, you can trade a Spearow for a Farfetch'd in the house next to it. Nice to complete your Pokedex, but that's about it. You can't reach the gym yet, so let's go to the party at the SS Anne!

SS Anne

This place has a lot of trainers and goodies. We'll take these hallway by hallway, starting with the one in which we enter. Start with the room completely to the right. Take the trainers here on one by one.

In the room with the Lass and Youngster, you can find TM08, Body Slam. Next, go to the right, and down, and take the stairs there.

You can find Ether and a Max Potion here, and more important, TM44, Rest. This is the end of this hallway. Go back up the stairs, to the left, and then down. Take the stairs there to the kitchen. Take the Great Ball from the lowest trash can, and go back out, and down the following stairs. Go down here, to the next stairs, we'll get to the cabins in a moment. Go to the upper deck first. There are two sailors here. Note that if you need to heal, you can always go back to the Pokecenter to do so, and return later.

Now enter the various cabins. In the first, a man will show you a Snorlax that gets added to your Pokedex. After that, you'll face various trainers.

I'd advice you to heal after these battles. You can pick up Max Ether and Rare Candy. After you go further, you will meet your rival, who battles you.

You can use the same strategy as before again, since his team hasn't changed.

After that, go up the stairs, and talk to the Captain. You'll automatically rub his back, he'll feel better, and you'll get HM01, Cut. Exit the SS Anne, which will leave as soon as you do so (so make sure you've gotten all the goodies!). Let's get that next badge now! Teach one of your Pokemon Cut, heal them, and go to the Gym.

Vermillion Gym

To get to the Gym Leader here, you'll have to do some searching. You will need to find two hidden switches. If you find one, the next will be in one of the trashcans next to it.. but if you pick the wrong one, you will need to find the first switch again.. which has gone to another trashcan.

This will be a hard battle if you don't have the right Pokemon, and haven't trained them well, but with just a bit of preparation, it will be pretty easy. You should have gotten quite a lot of training from the SS Anne, and if you need more, you can go the Route 11. Alternatively, try to have a Ground Pokemon ready. If you've caught and trained a Geodude in Mt. Moon, this would be a good time to use it, and Yellow and Blue users can use Sandshrew. If you don't have either, you can also go to Diglett Cave, and catch a Diglett there to train and defeat Surge with. In Red and Blue, the levels of Surge's Pokemon are pretty low, and should be easy to beat. His Raichu is much harder in Yellow, sporting Normal and Fighting attacks as well, but it's the only one, which should be a help. After you beat him, you get TM 24, Thunderbolt, the best electric attack in the game, and a Thunderbadge, which allows you to use Fly at any time, and increases their speed.

Now that we've beaten Surge, it's time to get us some things we couldn't reach before because some bushes were in the way. Exit the gym, and if you're playing Yellow, talk to agent in the middle of the town. She'll give you a Squirtle, a pretty good Water Pokemon. Woot. Next, enter and go through the Diglett cave. I won't bother putting up a table here - you can only catch Diglett and Dugtrio here. You might want to catch one. When you exit on the other side, you are on Route 2, at the side you couldn't reach before. You can find a Moonstone and HP UP here. In one of the houses, one of Prof. Oak's assistents will give you HM05, Flash, if you've caught at least 10 Pokemon - and if you've followed this walkthrough, you probably will have. In another house, you can trade an Abra (Red/Blue) or Clefairy (Yellow) for a Mr Mime here. If you haven't got a spare one, return here later for it. For now, cut away a bush, and go back to Viridian City to the south. There's a man you can only reach by cutting through a bush here. Do so, and he'll give you TM42, Dream Eater.

Go north to Pewter City now. Behind the museum, you can cut away another bush. If you enter there, you can talk to a scientist there, who will give you Old Amber, which you can revive later. For now, just store it in your PC. Now, go west to Cerulean City, either through the Diglett Cave or Mt Mount (which has suddenly become much easier). You can get south to Vermillion much easier now by using Cut, which we'll do in a moment. On Route 25, you can get TM19 by using Cut (if you haven't done so before). Those should be all the goodies. Go west from Vermillion City now, and go to Route 11..

This is a really nice place to train your Pokémon. A number of none-too-hard trainers (including the unique Engineers). This is also your chance to get a Drowzee - something I recommend, since it's probably the first Psychic Pokemon, and you're going to need those during your travels, and it's great at these low levels. There's a route house to the east where you can get an Item Finder if you have caught at least 30 Pokemon, and you can also trade Pokemon in here: Nidorino for Nidorina in Red and Blue, and in Yellow Lickitung for Dugtrio. Not really useful. When you try to leave further to the east, your way is blocked by a Snorlax. Unfortunately, we're going to have to take the long way to Lavender Town. Believe me, you're going to hate this. Go back to Cerulean City, and leave the city to the east, where you must cut a bush. You now enter Route 9.
