Saffron City
If you can't get here, buy a drink in Celadon City, and give it to one of the guards. All of them will let you pass now. This is a large city, with a number of things to do. However, some of them are currently blocked by Rockets. Heal your Pokémon, and go to the large tower in the middle of the City. It's been invaded by Rockets, and we're going to get rid of them. After you get the card key, you can reach all of the rooms that are blocked by the doors, which you can easily get: Go to the ninth floor, and to the right around the room. Beat the scientist, and step on the teleporter tile. Step down (this is important!) and beat the rocket. Go to the right and you can pick up the key. Once you have the key, you can also heal your Pokémon on the ninth floor. Go to the right, and talk to the girl standing near a lot of beds, and she will heal them.
There's also a number of interesting items here. Behind the top door on the second floor, you can get TM36, Selfdestruct. On the fifth floor, there's a Protein and TM09, Take Down, behind the door to the right. On the same place on the sixth floor you can find HP UP. On the seventh floor, you can find a TM03 Swords Dance in the right room. On the tenth floor to the right you can find TM26, Earthquake, Rare Candy and Carbos near each other.
The last you'll get from me is a trainer list. I will skip the ones you need to reach the end. You can only reach these rooms by going to th third floor, and taking the warp tile in the middle room. But that'd mean losing out on a lot of experience, and I wouldn't recommend doing that.

Note: In Red and Blue, you will encounter this Rocket when going to Giovanni
Now, let's go defeat the Rockets. Don't worry, these were most of the trainers by far. Go back to the third floor, and take the teleport tile in the 'middle' room. There, you will meet Gary again.

* Of these three, one of them will be what your rival's Eevee evolved into, the other two will be the other mentioned.
This will be a difficult battle. Your rival's levels are pretty high, so you better have trained well. The Pokemon to use should be pretty obvious, since you have faced their pre-evolutions before, and their evolutions aren't that more difficult.
If you have an empty slot on your party, you get a Lapras, a pretty good Water/Ice Pokémon. Step on the next tile, and you get warped to the top floor, to the part you couldn't reach. When you go down, you either battle a Rocket in Red and Blue, but in Yellow, Jessie and James reappear.

These are pretty easy. And with that, they blast off for the last time in the game. Walk forward and enter the room, where you face Giovanni again.

Although their levels are quite high, they will still easily fall. Nidorino can't stand Psychic or Ground attacks, Rhyhorn and Nidoqueen are easily beaten with Grass or Water, and Persian and Kangaskhan are of a low level, and easy to beat. After you beat him, talk to the director, and he'll give you a Masterball - a Pokeball that always catches the Pokémon. Store it in your PC, you really don't want to use this yet. Now it's time to get the rest of the goodies spread around Saffron
Saffron City revisited
A lot less Rockets are walking around and annoying us now. Go to the lower right house first, where you can get TM29, Psychic. Then go to the upper left house, where you can find the Copy Cat. If you've got a Pokedoll on you, you can give it to her and get TM31, Mimic. When you go to the right from here you'll notice two gyms. Let's just start at the left one.
You enter the Karate Dojo here. Beat the trainers in the order - they all use Fighting types, so a Psychic Pokémon should rip through them.

After fighting these trainers, you get a difficult choice. You can only pick one of the Pokemon here - either Hitmonlee or Hitmonchan. I often see Hitmonlee recommended because of its better stat distribution, but ultimately it comes down to your own preference. After picking it, store it in your box, because it won't be very usable in the gym next door - the official Pokemon League Saffron City Gym.
You can avoid fighting the trainers here by taking the upper right tile, the upper left, and then twice the the lower left. But that's not good for your training (which you'll need for this gym), so...

Okay. This is going to be the hardest trainer battle ever. Only bug type moves are strong against psychics, and they're only resisted by psychics. The best way to take these is to use Psychics, and to simply overwhelm them with physical power, since the Defense of these Pokemon isn't the strongest. You can easily train them strong enough in Red and Blue, but in Yellow, this will be much harder. It might be advisable for you to leave this battle until after you've beaten the Fuchsia City Gym.
There's now two ways we can go. Either we race down Route 16-18, the cycling road, or follow the scenic route 12-15. We'll go the fast way first. Head east to Route 16!
