Random Randomness / Majors
« on: June 19, 2015, 01:03 »
So, for those of you college, to-be college, or graduated kids around here, what's your major, or what are you thinking of making it?

My major is marketing. It sounds pretty boring but I could actually talk your ear off of a lot of things. It's like business meets psych/sociology. I'm hoping that when I get into it I'll be able to get a job in advertising, because that's my favorite section of it. At my school right now I have a concentration in Social Media, but I haven't taken any such courses yet and when I transfer I doubt my transfer school will have that concentration.

I thought about doing graphic design for a while but I mean... I feel like that's a profession where you have to deal with a lot of stupid people for not nearly enough money. Like, yeah, that encompasses almost any job, but I feel like its a lot of client work which can go kinda awry. I also wanted to do communications/journalism, but imo, thanks to blogs and the instantaneous way the news has to be delivered in the internet era just didn't seem much fun to me. Plus if I worked for an organization like Fox I would absolutely hate myself.

So, what kind of piece of paper do you wanna get?

Does anyone else here own Monster Hunter 4?

At the moment I'm low rank, but I'm trying my best to get good. It's my first Monster Hunter game, and I really enjoy it.

My friend code is 4527-9852-9846, if you add me we can hunt sometime or something.

Random Randomness / Everyday Accomplishments
« on: February 24, 2015, 00:35 »
Simple: Post something simple or small you accomplished today, but you're still proud of.

Today I spotted the stray cat that's been hanging around my campus that nobody has been able to bring to animal control. I sat down and got it close, and gained its trust. After calling Public Safety, and them telling me to call Animal Control, and then Animal Control being closed for the night, some people who lived nearby stopped and saw me with the cat, and then volunteered their apartment to keep the cat until the morning. I was like, alright, but when one of them tried to catch the cat, it ran away. I coaxed the cat back over, pet it for a bit, and then snagged it and brought it into their house. People have been trying to catch this cat for weeks with no avail, and I finally did. And good thing too, temperatures are supposed to get negative again tonight.

Role Play / Lost in Vinegrym - [J][AD][F]
« on: February 19, 2015, 15:32 »
“Group One – That is First Class – Please report to the boarding deck.”

The airport was bustling as a large group prepared to board the plane. The airport became louder as groups as the excitement began to grow among the group travelers. Passengers finished licking the icing from the cinnamon rolls from off their fingers.

“Group Two – That is rows 23 to 18 – Please report to the boarding deck.”

The calling continued, with each traveler gaining their place in line, and moving through the boarding area, and taking their seats on the plane.

When everyone had loaded, the flight attendant began to instruct the passengers on safety. The plane remained silent, out of courtesy rather than attention.

“In case of an emergency landing, oxygen masks will be deployed from the above compartment,” the attendant said, putting a prop mask on her face. “In case of a water landing, your seat cushion may function as a flotation device...”

A short time after the presentation, the plane was off. The wheels spun on the runway, and as the nose began to lift into the air, the air seemed to become terse as the passengers were forced far back into their seats. Soon the view from the window reflected an ever-shrinking New York City, as the plane rapidly moved away from land, and over the ocean. In less than eight hours, the passengers were expected to touch down in London.

The first three hours of the flight were as normal. Tiny soda cans, and tinier containers of mixed nuts were given to the passengers, along with menus with overpriced airplane food. That's when things got hectic.

The plane began to shake in the air. Passengers began to shake in their seats, and someone's glass of cola spills in the aisle. There were utterances of annoyance. However, upon peering out the window, only darkness could be seen. A loud crack echoed through the plane. A fuzzed voice appeared on the intercom. “Hello, this is your captain speaking. Do not panic, we were only hit by stray electricity. However, we would like to ask all passengers to fasten their restraints and remain seated.”

Shortly after the message, another bolt must have hit the plane. This time, the lighting flickered, and a burning smell could be smelled throughout the entire plane. The pilot crackled back on the intercom: “Due to the conditions, we're going to have to make an emergency water landing. Oxygen masks have been deployed. In the meantime, I must ask all passengers to remain calm, but prepare for a sudden landing. Thank you.”

The plane was overtaken with panic as the travelers grabbed the masks that had fallen before them, and secured them to their faces. The plane was shaking, and it was easy to see that many people were on the verge of getting sick while the plane made its way quickly down. The panic was nearly silent, but easily percieved.

At this point, you blacked out.

Hello, welcome to the role play! Your character is a young traveler that was in a major plane wreck. All you can remember is what came before the crash, blacking out, and then waking up on a beach. You know very little about where you've ended up, but rest assured, you'll figure all that out with the correct probing. All I'm going to tell you for now, is there's creatures of legend here, and you're not exactly in the safest of places at the moment.

To avoid worrying your parents, you're probably gonna wanna find your way back. But, how are you ever gonna do that?

I'm going to tell the storyline, and play most of the NPCs, as well as control the environment and provide information. Like any role play, you of course have the option of doing almost anything you want within reason, but I will be answering most of your questions about the world and controlling things such as combat that can get messy without the inclusion of a third party. If you've played D&D, I'm pretty much your DM.

Game Guidelines:

1) Don't god mode. I will deliver some powerful retribution for it.
2) Don't control other people's characters. However, in the case of a “cause and effect” case, I personally reserve the right to use a very short moment of control with your character, like tripping them and stuff.
3) Try to keep active. If stuff comes up, shoot me a message. If I notice you haven't posted in a bit, I may send a reminder to prevent you from falling behind. If you want a recap at any time, send me a message.
4) Don't worry about creating long posts. You have full liberty to write as much as you want, but it's okay to write posts that are short, but sufficient in describing what you want to do.

Role Play / [Disc] Slightly atypical role play
« on: February 14, 2015, 19:17 »
So, as I become more involved in D&D, I'm finding that I definitely like the idea of there being a DM in forum-based role play. I feel like all too often players are too afraid to push the plot in a direction, and it often leads to role plays stagnating, and oftentimes, the death of the game.

I've been thinking of being more of a DM of sorts in a future role play I'm thinking of creating. I'd just play any NPCs or forces of nature, and dictate what does and doesn't happen through dice rolls and stuff to keep things fair. I've seen it rarely on a lot of role playing sites, but I feel like it could work, I would just probably have to sacrifice making my own character, or merely have him / her as a way of getting stuff done.

I was thinking of rekindling an idea I had a while ago, about a group of kids / teenagers getting stranded on a remote island thanks to a plane or boat crash, or even by some strange force getting "teleported" to a fantasy kind of world, where they need to survive and find their way back. That way I could provide lore and create plenty of conflict for the players to deal with, and you're not gonna be able to defeat every enemy that comes your way. I'm thinking of even making certain dramatic failures result in death / injury of the character, which comes to another question: Would you be too P.O'd if as an unbiased GM I made things difficult for your character, like making them sick if they do things that should probably make you sick, or getting hurt / even killed in some situations. Of course, if I implemented death I'd make it more like a Dungeons and Dragons style where you could be brought back by some quest or magical item.

I feel either way I'm still gonna get around to making the role play, but I would just like to know if this is an idea that others would despise or if you would consider it interesting. I'd definitely make there be a decent amount of unexpected danger, a decent amount of combat, and a lot of exploring with a more interactive environment. However if you definitely wouldn't have any interest in a role play like it, or if you have horror stories about it, I'd be interested in hearing them. And, on the other side of the coin, I'd love to hear interest in the idea if you are at all.

Random Randomness / History Stories
« on: February 13, 2015, 14:33 »
Man, all of the lines I have to wait in have really put me on a roll with making topics...

I'm a huge fan of history and I love to discuss amusing or questionable things that happened in the past, as well as dispelling myths and so on. I know a lot of weird or funny historical consequences, but this one I just heard in my Euro History class takes me cake:

A french noble revolutionary by the name of Marquis de Condorcet. He had some pretty radical views and was even one of the few revolutionaries who believed women should even have rights. However, he was a nobleman and during the Reign of Terror he got caught in some trouble with the Third Estate revolutionaries and fled to the boonies of France to escape. He probably would have gotten away from his death too... if he didn't ask for an omelette at the Inn he was staying at. Being a nobleman and being able to pay cooks, he knew very little about cooking himself, and when the innkeeper asked how many eggs he wanted in his omelette he replied, "A dozen". At that exact moment the Third Estate innkeeper realized he was a noble and he was captured and killed. Too bad, he was a great thinker. All for not knowing a damn thing about cooking.

Maybe it's a common story in europe, but living in America and taking a ton of history courses, I didn't hear about it until an hour ago, and we have units on the French Revolution.

So, do you guys know any crazy history stories? Even if it's just weird local history.

Gaming / DOTA
« on: February 12, 2015, 20:12 »
So, I personally took a long break from DOTA, but after some chit chat on IRC I figured I'd see who here plays.

From DOTA's website:

"Dota is a competitive game of action and strategy, played both professionally and casually by millions of passionate fans worldwide. Players pick from a pool of over a hundred heroes, forming two teams of five players. Radiant heroes then battle their Dire counterparts to control a gorgeous fantasy landscape, waging campaigns of cunning, stealth, and outright warfare."

If you don't have it already, it's free to play, and the only time you'd ever need to spend money is if you wanna swag up your hero.

Here's where you can download DOTA 2

If anyone is interested, but doesn't know how to play, I'd be willing to guide you on a crash course when i finally get my headset fixed. Those who know how to play, we could even convene maybe once a week and form a five stack.

Although its already listed on the steam thread, my name is Kpyna on steam. Just pop that into the search, and I'm the not sketchy looking profile. I can't play at the moment, but I'd be down to answer any questions or provide guidance to those who may want it, and then play once my headset gets back to me.

Random Randomness / Snow
« on: February 12, 2015, 14:37 »
Man, how do y'all feel about snow? I used to love it, but after getting into two car crashes involving that powdery white stuff, as well as just having 3+ feet on the ground right now, I'm slowly growing to resent it.

Last night me and two other people spent a whole 2 hours trying to get my rear wheel drive out of the snow because it kept sliding around on it, public safety threatened to tow my car at my expense (they wanted to plow, that's why I was moving it), and then I finally get out, and drive it to the other side of campus where I have to walk.

Now I finish my 8 am class and step outside, and thick flakes of snow are falling everywhere, and already sticking to the ground. They're forcing me to move my car back into the lot, although I'm willing to bet tomorrow they're gonna want me to move again, back to the lot in the boonies of campus. And since we're supposed to get a fair amount today, I'm sure I'll be stuck shoveling out my car in the very near future again...

Plus the amount we have has made it impossible to go hiking or walk off of any paved paths because in some parts you will sink beyond your knees...

So, what's the snow situation like in your neck of the woods? Or do you just hate happiness and wish you had as much snow as the east coast has right now?

Random Randomness / Buffalo Chicken
« on: February 03, 2015, 14:55 »
Buffalo chicken, often prepared as wings, tenders, or even nuggets, are pretty much one of the best options American cuisine has to offer. While they're often used in conjunction with 'merican sporting events like football, they also have plenty of use in sandwiches or served as is.

If you haven't tried buffalo chicken before, you should make them as soon as possible. For a simple way to make them, first cook your chicken part of choice. Make sure the chicken either has skin attached, or its fried. Melt a half of a cup of butter or so, and then add that and about a third a cup of your favorite cayenne hot sauce into a bowl you can use for mixing. Some people at this point add salt or other seasonings, but it's not really needed. Mix the chicken and sauce together, and voila - spicy buffalo chicken wings. Depending on which kind of hot sauce and how much you use is what makes them anywhere from mild spiciness to hot enough to force tears from your eyes.

If you make them too hot, you'd likely enjoy dousing them in Bleu cheese dressing or ranch dressing.

So, what are your opinions on buffalo chicken? How hot do you like them? Do you have any spices you would recommend when making them? Are you a wings person or a tenders person?

Debate / Sony Pictures Pulls "The Interview"
« on: December 17, 2014, 23:18 »
Just looking for some lighthearted opinion-based debate on this.

For the uninitiated, Sony planned to release a movie called "The Interview". There's been a few ads for it on TV, and it's been in development for a while. Basically the premise of the movie is Seth Rogan and James Franco are journalists, and they score an interview with Kim Jong Un. They are then tasked by the CIA to try to assassinate the dictator, and "hilarity" ensues in the process. Trailers exist on the internet if you want to look them up, but there's some strong language and lewd jokes in them.

So, a terrorist group from North Korea is understandably not that happy about this movie, and they've been doing attacks on Sony for weeks, threatening to leak their info and hacking them. They just recently issued a warning to Sony and all theatres that show the movie that if it is shown, they'll do a 9/11 style attack on the theatres that play it. So, that's pretty scary, and so most theatres are refusing to show it because if this group did attack theatres on Christmas Day, the release of The Interview, that would be pretty terrifying.

A lot of people have been yelling at Sony for buckling to terrorism, which I personally understand. It kind of feels like an attack of the dignity and pride of America for theatres to refuse to show this film because a foreign group told us not to. However, I think that theatres and Sony had the right idea to pull this movie. I think that on the chance that something big did happen when this movie is shown, there's the possibility America would freak out and it could potentially prompt another war in the East, as we already are pretty tense with North Korea at the moment, given all of the international stuff that's been going on between us for a while. I'm thinking this could potentially develop more over time too, especially since Sony and major theatres seem to be entertaining the possibility of a later showing, after Christmas.

I mean, everyone's pretty scared, but we did a similar thing, except to Hitler, in Charlie Chaplin's "The Great Dictator". I think it would have been better off if they took a page from the book of that movie and made it an obvious allegory, but eh. I hate to compare the two, because the quality difference is really stark. However, I'm still a pretty big Seth Rogan and James Franco fan, so I hope this movie will see a DVD release and be able to be seen by the public eye at some point.

So, opinions North Korea's most recent act of terror?

Your Art / ITT: Doodles by Liz
« on: December 10, 2014, 16:05 »
I'm not a serious artist by any means. I just like to doodle when I get bored. I'm not really looking for crits or anything, I just know that I personally like to see how other people draw because I think it's interesting, so I'm putting my stuff out there. Most of these are gonna be paper and pencil and taken with my phone camera.

My old roommate made a huge mess and left it out for days. I wasn't gonna pick it up so I left her this.

One of my friend's favorite shows is Bob's Burgers and it was her birthday, so I made her a custom card in my downtime.

This is a picture of Leon I drew a while back, which turned into my signature picture that I have at the moment. I usually don't draw people because the need for symmetry drives me bananas.

This is a dragon that I made for a D&D character's familiar. Not sure if that's gonna be the final design, or what. I might even change gears completely and go with a tiny pocket sized sea serpent, since the game is gonna be about pirates. Also some self criticism I have to address is that back leg just kills me, but I think the cleaning ladies threw the picture out so it's never getting fixed.

I suppose that if anyone wants to make a request, I might do it, but I really just draw for leisure so if I'm bored and your suggestion comes to mind I'll do it, but probably not in any sort of order and some people's requests may never get done and yeah. I'll put more up later as I make 'em.

Role Play / .:4150 [AD][SF]
« on: April 11, 2014, 04:29 »
Welcome to the year 4150.

I guess this might be kind of hard for some of you to process. “Why am I here?”, you may ask. Some of you may even have more basic questions, such as why we can keep this room cool, despite the fact that it's clearly blazing hot outside. “Wasn't it just the 23rd century?”, you might ask.

But let me start off here, generally, and try to be as clear as I can. Depending on when you all lived, you may have different ideas on how time works. To avoid getting too technical and over some of your heads, Time is hardly a straight procession, it's totally relative. Now that I've told you that fact, in recent years, we've managed to harness time travel through extensive testing, and discovered fairly secure ways to travel through the fabric of space and time to warp to any point in time imaginable.

However, turn your attention to outside. Just step right out of your chambers, and please, be slow, and don't make any sort of sudden movement. Your body has been fast frozen for many years. You may notice our barren and destroyed planet. You see, time travel was the best tourism tool to ever grace this country. The moment we invented it, people were flocking to it. Holding up their entire life's savings to get a tour of the past or the future! “I want to watch a show at the Colosseum”, some asked. “I want to see the first rocket launch”, others desired. Some wanted to see first contact with the Vasu. The thing is, some of these tourists managed to escape into the time periods they were supposed to just be visiting. Now, if you were alive in the time to be familiar with the “butterfly effect”, you may see how this could go terribly wrong.

Sure, stepping on a butterfly won't have serious consequences. Some things are truly fated, and removing a few animals, people, or other things can be pretty trivial. Other things, however... were not fated to happen. Killing the Earth's and the galaxy's most treacherous creatures would seem like a fantastic idea to some of the feeble minded. Yes, even today, there are still idiots with a lot of money, who would pay top dollar to go back and kill Hitler, or Almaren. Huge historical figures like these... these effected the course of history. Our planet was completely decimated, due to some being unable to see the silver lining of the world's greatest terrors.

Anyways, back to removing a few things that don't matter in the course of time... Your timeline, at least. I'm sorry to rip you from your everyday lives, and I'm sorry to inform you that your entire family is dead. However, removing you all from your time hardly effected the equation. Most of you were meant to die soon, anyhow.

Sorry to make you all feel... insignificant. However, to lift your spirits, you all are tasked with one of the most important jobs that the human race will ever have. You all will remove the people who ruined the future from history. Each one of you has been pulled from a different time line, and your expertise in that field is vital to the success of our mission.

Yeah, this is extremely glorified mercenary work. I'm not here to lie to you. You are going to be either bringing these people back to this time, where they belong, or even killing some that refuse to go down without a fight. I've been hard at work trying to identify the most vital time criminals for you all to take out. And before you worry, you're all perfectly equipped. I did some tinkering with your bodies and minds. I removed all of those pesky old-timey diseases, and I downloaded some training for 42nd century technology. All that's left is to give you all some vaccines, so we all don't get measles and die en-route.

As of now, you all are some of the most important people on this Earth, and, hell, maybe even in the entire Galaxy. It's up to you all to go back, and save our world from becoming any more distorted.

If the intro wasn't enough, welcome to the year 4150. Pretty much everyone is dead. All that's lef tis your ragtag group of mercenaries, the professor, and a few others that desperately try to keep the world fed and the power working.

To travel time in, you have a neat shape-shifting spaceship. To bring some Dr. Who in this, imagine it to be like the Tardis was originally meant to function, before it got all screwed up and was stuck in police box form forever. The inside is basically just a high functioning space ship that can manipulate space to change time, or something. We're all from a time before space travel, so who actually knows.

Your character is going to be from a renowned period in history, or in the future. Get creative. Basically, our goal is to travel through time, and to other worlds, to find and bring justice to those who abused time travel.

Anyways, get ready to climb into the ship, and put on your best 80s clothes. And by 80s clothes, I mean 80 AD. So grab some cloth and make a quick toga. Let's go!

Rules:
PKMN.NET rules should be followed at all times.
No powerplaying. Don't control other people's characters without permission. Certain instances are alright, but if you're not sure where powerplaying is or isn't okay, just don't do it at all to be safe.
No god moding. While you have ray guns and fun stuff like that, John Doe from 2010 probably won't be having the best aim until he gets better.
Please write in third person.

Unrules:
Get creative! Love WWII? Play a soldier. Like Sci-Fi? Make your own alien race. I'll only stop you if it gets super crazy. Within the course of the roleplay, remember, time can get messy, so don't worry too much about accuracy.
Don't be afraid to take the plot places. As long as our characters get work done in a somewhat timely manner, the professor doesn't care... or know. Feel free to goof around and make things happen.
Not experienced? I don't really care! Just follow the rules, and at least type at the level that a 13 year old could type at, and be willing to improve.
Character count is up to you, but it would be great if you focused on one.
Questions? Message me!

Wayleon North - 23rd century - Played by echo
Taken from just after the human race made contact with the Vasu, the first alien race ever encountered. Looks like a mix between an anime character and a sculpture, and kind of cocky.
Damien Delacroix - 1980s - Played by Dana
Your stereotypical hair metal 80s guy, complete with teased hair and a cigarette addiction. A fairly popular guy who vanished before his chance to make it big.
Clipper (Genertically Modified Crow) - 22nd century - Played by Dana
Caw! Caw! No really, he's just a really smart crow that's trained in spying and warfare. Despite being able to speak in human tongues, he'll stick peck your eyes out.
Lucille Lovell - 17th century - Played by Chloe
An rather surreptitious grown-up orphan, who knows more than her fair share of street smarts. Scrawny, pale, and generally unkempt.
George Villiers (Buckingham) - 17th century - Played by Chloe
The clumsy Duke of Buckingham himself, here to inject the poshness of the 1600s. Nice black hair, and a cool black mustache.
James Green - 1900s (WWII) - Played by ShinyBlaziken
With dirty tan skin and messy black hair, James is a smart, modest, Hawaiian boy that served America in the pacific theatre. Atta boy.

A hardened Aztec Jaguar, fashioned with muscles and scars from numerous. Quick to anger, and even swifter in movement, just keep on Blood Coyote's good side.

I've been playing pokemon my entire life. Some of my first memories are playing Pokemon Yellow, and watching my brother play it. I don't even know when I began playing, probably around the age of 3 or 4. Gen 2 was a really special generation for me because I learned to read as I was playing it, so I actually got to know the story. I've played the second generation games countless times, and in my opinion, they're the best generation. That's why I decided to do a Nuzlocke.

Anyways, enough about me. Gonna list the Nuzlocke rules I'll be using:

  • Any Pokémon that faints is considered dead, and must be released.
  • The player may only catch the first Pokémon encountered in each area, and none else. If the first Pokémon encountered faints or flees, there are no second chances.
  • Not officially enforcing this rules until the player has Poké Balls and can catch Pokémon.
  • The player must nickname all of their pokemon.
  • Black out/white out is considered to be "game over"
  • I will continue to play from my last save point in the case of a "game over", but I will record all of the times that I lose.
  • Can only use captured / pokemon that are traded ingame.
  • No resetting.
  • if the player runs into a Shiny Pokémon on the incredibly rare chance, the player may still catch it, regardless of whether or not it is the first encounter in the area. If the shiny dies, it gets boxed and never used again, since I couldn't forgive myself for releasing a shiny.
  • If the player has no Pokémon that can use a certain field move that is required to continue through any given point of the game, they may catch another Pokémon that can learn said field move. However, it cannot be used in battle for any reason, and must be released, permanently boxed, or migrated as soon as the player gets another Pokémon that can use said field move.
  • No fleeing.

And thus begins the journey! I'll update from checkpoints like gym battles, or in the case of this first episode... pokeballs.

Gonna have it in its own post, because the character limit.

Old topic was like 3 years old so I figure I'll make an updated one rather than bumping it from the grave.

Steam, Valve's game client with a community, market, mods, and all sorts of other cool stuff! It's free (well, not the games, but during sales they're famously cheap), so if you like video games I'd sign right up!

Anyways, share your steam usernames and some multiplayer games you play often and I'll add them to a list so we all can add each other and always have buddies to play with!
