I remember watching my brother catch a Shiny Pokémon. But it was in Pokémon Silver. And a Gyrados. In the Lake of Rage. Plotline.

You are wrong, in a sense. If you catch your own Shiny Magikarp and evolve it, then you know that the Shiny Gyarados you've got is special and unique, compared to all the freebie Gyarados. It's not worthless at all.

I meant more worthless in terms of trading, no-one with HGSS would really trade anything decent for it. I think shiny gyarados should be different to Red Gyarados...

Fair enough, but I wouldn't bother evolving a shiny Magikarp and trading it in the first place.
Whilst I am on this subject, I actually had a Shiny Magikarp flee in the Safari Zone a couple of months ago. I haven't seen one since.

Yeahhh, on one level irony suck about the Red Gyarados. And let's not forget that there was a shiny Magikarp event around the place somewhere too =P But I'm kind of happy with it because of that. It's a special little awesome fail~
