how why do magnets work

Magnets work because the atoms within [e.g. iron] have unpaired electrons which have spin in the same direction. By combining all of the tiny microscopic magnetic fields caused by the spin, they create a larger magnetic field. 
Or something close to that. I'm really not a physicist. 
Answering rhetoric questions is more interesting than old memes, anyway.

Four dates over seven months with the same person. Everything is so slow and moving flats then moving home, constant changes to social, uni and work timetables also getting in the way, I don't even know what's going on. Either we need to meet regularly and start holding hands or we decide to be just friends...I think? Or maybe I can just drag this out for another year so I still appear to have a social life.  :S

So I just got another birthday present. 2 weeks late. I open the parcel, asking the cat 'Angus, what've I been ordering I didn't know about?'.

I open the contents of the package. 3 games in there:
Armed and Dangerous, (Heard of it before amazingly)
Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Silver Earring,
Create City (Looks just like SimCity, shame I have SimCity 4 Deluxe on Steam),
and a card too.

I open the card, revealing a letter from my auntie and a cheque for £20 (Putting me at around £180 ). The letter explains that she missed my birthday, and didn't know what to get, and she thought that getting some cheap PC games and giving me some cash would be better than buying me a random Xbox or PS3 game.

I don't know why, but this situation baffles me.

Anyway...

it's strange that I don't have some nutty dream or weird thought to go here... that confuses me right about now. Future me, find something weird or get obsessed with time travel again. OR ELSE

Why do magnets exist? They're a quirk of nature and the way that atoms work. You may as well ask any other question. Why does life exist? Why are the oceans made up of water and not some other liquid? Why does our planet happen to have tectonic plates? Why do atoms have protons and electrons? Why is nitrogen prevalent in our atmosphere? Why has the concept of religion and God originated in so many separate human civilisations throughout history? 
Quirks of nature. The explanation of why they exist is nothing more than the explanation of how they exist. 
 
And so on and so forth. 
 
So, what confuses me? 
The desire to be individual for the sake of it. 
Any attempt to be random or zany or whatever for the sake of it, that confuses me. 
Aimed at nobody in particular. 
Well, save for the 13 year olds who like to run around shouting about pie and cheese or whatever else is randomlol, but luckily they're fewer and further between than they used to be.
