It wasn't cherry picking, "shake" was just the only viable next word out of the list (you can't change "slake" to "steak").

No, the game is not confusing if you read Ferox's rules. Prysmilk clearly hasn't read these rules. Why not change Slake to Stake if starting from Prysmilk's effort rather than Lucifer's? Over to you Prysmilk
