literally i had a test on thursday and tried to work out the quadratic formula by hand instead of factorising and just didn't leave it in surd form because i spent so long trying to find the square root of 272

I'm guessing that you're on about dividing an equation with more than two [numbers? idk] by one with only two.

It's dividing a set of 3 or more terms by a set of 2 terms. ex: 15x^3-12x+5/5x+1
