How can I expand on this sims storyline?

I'm thinking about making a video with the sims 3 though my storyboarding skills could do with some improvement.
I could do with some advice on how I could expand my story.

Here is what I have so far:
A young farmer (in the present day) bored with his farmboy lifestyle, searches the nearby town to find something more interesting to do with his life.
He stumbles across a portal which sends him to a post-apocalyptic future with a shortage of food.
Being a farmer, he is able to provide the future characters with the food that he has grown.
Everyone in the town hails him a hero.

Somewhere in between going into the future and saving it, my farmer character is going to have to experience a conflict of some sort - thus preventing him from saving everyone straight away.

The farmer is the only obvious character I have at this point, I'm going to have to add other characters in there or else the story isn't going to go anywhere!

What kind of characters would I need to make to imply the future is post-apocalyptic and what kind of conflict could prevent my farmer character from saving everyone?

My dad has suggested that I add a love interest (possibly one of the characters in the future) for my farmer to make things a little more interesting.

 If you have the Supernatural expansion pack, your farmer could find that the world he's in also has zombies (they eat your plants). So he would have to try and find a way to grow his food where it's safe.

Maybe the love interest could have a large family and they try using him for his food?

I love sims.

I like the idea of the zombies eating the plants, maybe I could add to the story that the zombies turn other sims into zombies by infecting the plants with some sort of virus!

I just thought, I could use the cowplant in my story somehow.
Zombie eats plant, cowplant eats zombie!
