Whitney is the leader of the Goldenrod city gym. She specialises in normal-type Pokémon. When Ash and friends first went to her gym in A Goldenrod Opportunity it was closed. Whitney then met them while out shopping. They save her Clefairy from being stolen by Team Rocket. It is then that she reveals herself as the gym leader and offers to open the gym for them.

The first battle in the gym goes pretty well until Whitney sends out her Miltank. Ash's Pokémon were defeated by its fatal Rollout. He went away to think about what he was going to do. The next day, in A Dairy Tale Ending, Whitney invited them all to her Uncle Milton's Miltank dairy farm.

After another Team Rocket scheme was foiled, Ash requested a rematch. This time - with a lot of strategy - he was able to beat Miltank and win the Plain badge.

Nidorina
Caught prior to episode A Goldenrod Opportunity. Ash beats this with Cyndaquil.

Clefairy
Caught prior to A Goldenrod Opportunity. Perhaps the worst of Whitney's Pokémon. She orders it to use a Metronome on Cyndaquil and it produces a Disable! Cyndquil gave it one fiery blast and it surrenders.

Miltank
Caught prior to episode A Goldenrod Opportunity. In the aforementioned episode Ash's Cyndaquil, Mudkip and Pikachu are all thrashed by it. For the rematch in A Dairy Tale Ending Ash uses the same combination again. Cyndaquil weakens it and then Totodile digs ditches with its Water Gun. Pikachu then hides in a ditch as Miltank rolls over it and Headbutts it into the air. Pikachu then Thunderbolts it to defeat.
