An eight-year quest has finally come to an end.
It began in 1995. Red - or Ash, as some call him - was ten years old. He would be allowed to go on a Pokémon journey. A quest to create the greatest Pokémon team ever seen. A quest to fight the greatest trainers in Kanto. A quest to see all the Pokémon in the world.
So Red formed a strong team. He beat the Elite Four, and his own rival. And he caught all 150 Pokémon.
But wait. What is this Pokémon that has completed his Pokédex? MewTWO? A clone? A child? Where is the parent?
That parent was Mew. Red had heard that his Japanese cousin had been given Mew when all other Pokémon had been caught. This was a lie. He heard that a lorry near the SS Anne was Mew's home. This was a lie. He heard that Mew was a prize at tournaments.
This was true.
But this was 1999. There would be no more Mew giveaways.
Red could not handle the pressure. He went insane. There was only one thing left to do. He fled to Johto. He made a home for himself in the depths of the country's largest mountain; Mt. Silver.
The quest now belonged to someone else. A young boy named Gold. He too would have to form a strong team, battle strong trainers and complete the Pokédex. This would be trickier. There were now 251 Pokémon. He would have to trade with his friends. He would have to trade with the past.
Trade he did. He even bred for new Pokémon. He went to dangerous lands and chased dogs - or maybe cats - throughout the nation. There we go. 249 Pokémon. Two more to go.
The first was Celebi. Where was this keeper of time? Gold had heard that his Japanese cousin had been given a Celebi after a phonecall. This was true. He heard that Celebi was available at tournaments. This was true. Celebi was not a challenge.
One more to go.
Where is Mew?
Across the ocean, a new quest was beginning. A quest for 202 Pokémon. These were easily caught. Two Pokémon were available from cards. Not a challenge. Between them, Gold and his Hoenn soulmates had 385 Pokémon. Some of the rarest in the world. Legendary Pokémon of great strength.
One Pokémon was missing.
Where is Mew?
Ah, there it is.
No, really.
I am looking down at Mew. It is at level seven. It knows no move but Pound. It is so small, yet so huge. It is a tiny kitten, yet it possesses more power than any Pokémon ever seen. It is said to have been the ancestor of all Pokémon ever seen. The Eve of Pokémon.
And here it is.
Inside a Guard House.
Let's back up. I will tell you how this came to be. You will be able to do the same.
I have been through the Red, Blue or Yellow version. I have three badges. I have HM02, Fly. This is important.
I have not battled the Gambler with two Poliwags and a Poliwhirl on Route 8. I have not battled the Youngster on Route 25 - the second one, facing north in front of two trees - who has a Slowpoke. This is VERY important.
Now do as I say.
There is a house on Route 8 that leads to an Underground Path. Stand by the door. Save. From now on, you cannot save, or Mew will escape forever.
Walk one step forward and press Start QUICKLY. If you fail, the Gambler will fight you and Mew will escape forever. If this happens, turn the game off.
You should now be facing the gambler with the Start menu up. Go to your Pokémon. Use Fly; go to Cerulean City.
As you Fly, the Gambler will see you. The familiar "!" will show this.
Your Start button will not work for a while. Don't panic.
Go up across the Nugget Bridge. Head for the Youngster found among some bushes. He is facing upwars. Make sure that he WALKS UP TO YOU. This is important. If you walk right next to him to talk to him, Mew will be destroyed forever. As will your save game.
Defeat the Slowpoke. Fly to Lavender Town.
Go west to Route 8. The Start menu will pop up by itself.
Press B.
Mew will appear.
You may want to have brought some Ultra Balls.
There you are, Mew, so small and so huge.
So weak and so powerful.
So rare and so common.
Pokéball.
GO!
