Ideal Teams
I have chosen the following Pokémon for my Recommended, "If you can't win with these, Pokémon Battles are just not your thing, period", teams, one a team of Rental Pokémon for those of you who are unable to train your own Pokémon on Red, Blue and/or Yellow, and a team for those of you who are able to do so. I'm not going to lie here, the battles are so much easier if you can train your own Pokémon because you'll have so much more flexibility over the moves you want to use, but sometimes life deals you lemons. So we make lemonade!Rental Team

Kadabra Level 15 |
Raichu Level 15 |
Ponyta Level 15 |
Seadra Level 15 |
Mankey Level 15 |
Nidoking Level 15 |
Here I've gone for as diverse a team as possible in terms of types, whilst aiming to use the Pokémon which have the biggest advantage in their moves. Unfortunately, it's not easy as the Rentals are far from wonderful, I guess they really wanted you to use your own Pokémon. Anyway! Kadabra gets the nod over Alakazam because of one move; Psychic. Access to Psychic means that he will take out any Poison and Fighting Pokémon in the bat of an eyelid, delivering serious damage to any Pokémon that don't share a Psychic type, and still has enough power in his punch to harm those Psychic Pokémon he'll oppose. Raichu could be better, but the rounded stats make him more appealing to risk Thunder's shaky accuracy on.
Seadra gets access to two moves that make her so brilliant; Ice Beam and Surf. With Ice Beam, the pesky Dragonair you'll face in the Final of both Rounds becomes so much more manageable, and those horrible Grass types can be hit for serious damage. Surf is compulsory on any Water type. Mankey is chosen simply because he offers a Super Effective move on Normal Pokémon which may pose a bit more of a problem if you're using Rentals.
Ponyta is probably the hardest-hitting Fire Pokémon you can choose from Rentals; her Fire Blast will torch any Ice, Grass or Bug types. She doesn't have much else to offer, but it's what she can offer that makes her so alluring. Nidoking has Earthquake; 'nuff said. Just Earthquake anything that moves, Bubblebeam anything that's x4 weak to it and switch to Raichu for anything that flies.

Alakazam Level 20 |
Raichu Level 15 |
Arcanine Level 15 |
Cloyster Level 15 |
Clefable Level 15 |
Onix Level 15 |
In truth, I cannot stress enough the dominance that Alakazam enjoyed in this game (and Generation); only Mewtwo had an easier time with battles, and we all know just how broken Mewtwo was in this game. The other five Pokémon are more or less expendable, as long as you keep a good type balance for when you may feel Alakazam can't do it on his own.
The other thing I have done is given this recommendation on the assumption that we're all dirty, stinking cheaters who have abused the Missingno glitch to the high heavens and enjoy an unlimited supply of all the worthwhile TMs. If it helps, I've limited the use of each TM to just one though. I would also strongly recommend you give each Pokémon 10 each of HP Up, Protein, Iron, Calcium and Carbos to improve their stats as much as possible before using them on the Ultimate Stage!
#065 Alakazam | |
---|---|
Alakazam |
Level 20 Reflect Psychic Substitute Thunder Wave |
Strategy | |
There isn't an awful lot Alakazam can do, or really needs to do, at this point of the game in terms of diversity, but it hardly needs to. All you want to be doing here is firing off the most powerful Psychic off at this point of the game; there are only opposing Psychic types that can resist it, everything else takes neutral damage at best. Thankfully, those are rare even in Round 2, and they can hardly do anything to Alakazam in return, whilst Alakazam can mess things up for them thanks to his brilliant Speed and Special. Psychic. That should be all you intend to do. If you come up against a rival Psychic type, Alakazam can help it's team-mates by paralysing the opponent Pokémon, even hiding behind a Substitute if you want to play safe. Be warned that Reflect doesn't carry across (as in only Alakazam gets the boost and it disappears if you switch him out), but it can help keep Alakazam in a powerful position. He is definitely your MVP. |

Alakazam can be found as an Abra north of Cerulean City on Route 24 between the levels of 8 and 12. It may be frustrating to capture and train, but.. by god is it worth the wait. Once it gets to Level 16, it evolves into Kadabra and then into Alakazam immediately again by trading. If you can't trade, don't worry too much as Kadabra more than holds it's own although understandably not as powerful as his older brother. | |
#026 Raichu | |
Raichu |
Level 15 Flash Mega Punch Thunderbolt Thunder Wave |
Strategy | |
Although he is the evolved form of everybody's 'favourite' Pokémon mascot, Raichu is probably your best bet because you're unable to get Jolteon unless you trade a Lv5 Eevee across from Gold & Silver, and there isn't a fully evolved Electric type available. Raichu is a mixed bag really.. capable of being a very powerful Electric type but it is rather fragile unfortunately. Thankfully he packs enough of a punch to do what it needs to do. Thunderbolt any Water or Flying Pokémon, Thunderwave the others and run. If you do use Raichu, I'd always look at using your Water Pokémn in your party of 3 because it covers anything Raichu can't take on his own, and vice versa. | |
Location? | |
Pikachu is found in Viridian Forest at either the levels 3 or 5. Hardly any difference either way, other than that the Level 5 Pikachu's already have Thundershock which makes it easier to level him up. | |
#059 Arcanine | |
Arcanine |
Level 15 Dragon Rage Fire Blast Mimic Swift |
Strategy | |
Arcanine doesn't have an awful lot of moves for it to use, but it uses the moves it receives rather well. Dragon Rage is an absolutely amazing move in this Cup because the vast majority of Pokémon don't terribly high HP and you'll find it becomes a 2-Hit KO on pretty much every Pokémon bar perhaps Clefable and Wigglytuff. Fire Blast and Body Slam are then coverage moves, really. Dragon Rage all the way. Mimic is there really as an option for in case you see a move you want to use, but it's hardly ever the best option to take as Dragon Rage or Fire Blast will usually be your most damaging move to choose. | |
Location? | |
Growlithe at Level 15 can be found on Route 8, but the biggest problem is that you can only evolve it immediately and thus can't actually train it outside of giving it 10 of each of the vitamin items. However, your biggest asset here is your Level 20 Alakazam which is without a shadow of a doubt the strongest and most powerful threat available at this point. | |
#091 Cloyster | |
Cloyster |
Level 15 Body Slam Explosion Ice Beam Surf |
Strategy | |
Cloyster may be a bit of an odd choice, but he is more than reliable in Generation I and doesn't just have good Attack to go with it's massive Defence, but very impressive Special too. Coupled with the availability of the above moves, all by TM moves, it has the stats to use all of them and the speed to pull an Explosion out of nowhere to take bigger threats out of the match. Surf and Ice Beam are all powerful moves from any Pokémon, but Cloyster gets a Same-Type boost for them. Cloyster can take on pretty much any Pokémon and has the tools to fight back. Explosion is utterly amazing from Cloyster, but of course, it causes you to sacrifice Cloyster. Ice Beam and Surf nail an awful lot of types, Body Slam gives you a third and powerful option from his Attack. | |
Location? | |
Shellder can be found on Route 19 using a Super Rod, and is always found at Level 15 there. Although you can't train it any further, you can nab a Water Stone from Celadon City and evolve it straight away; perfect for the Pika Cup! | |
#036 Clefable | |
Clefable |
Level 15 Fire Blast Seismic Toss Surf Tri-Attack |
Strategy | |
Clefable is your no-thrills, does the job Normal Pokémon and one of the best at this point in the game. Clefable basically stands up to almost anything, seeing as Fighting Pokémon aren't overly powerful on this game and those that are get mauled in no uncertain terms by Alakazam. She'll not win convincingly on her own, but she'll definitely allow you to cover many types with her diversity and go down kicking and shouting if you do need to sacrifice somebody. It really is down to the opposition Pokémon, Fire Blast nails any Grass, Bug and Ice Pokémon, Ice Beam takes down any Flying and Ground Pokémon, Surf hits those Rock, Ground and Fire types whilst Tri-Attack is a nice, strong attack coming from Clefable's decent Attack stat; perfect for those Pokémon with high Special and low Defence. | |
Location? | |
Clefairy is rare, but it does live in Mount Moon where I've always found it more common on the basement levels than the main levels. It does involve having to run/fight copious and tiring amounts of Zubat, though, which is never a good thing unless you're training an Electric or Psychic type. | |
#095 Onix | |
Onix |
Level 15 Bind Earthquake Screech Rock Slide |
Strategy | |
Onix may not be the bulky, ferocious towering snake that it's portrayed to be in the animé, but he's more than powerful enough to act as a member of your three. If you're worried about Electric types, look no further than Onix as he can take any Physical hit with ease, and hit back with power. Bind is a wonderful attack on this game if you're faster than your opponent as it disables your opponent whilst it's in said move, perfect for Onix and it's respectable speed. Don't hang around if you see an Electric type, Earthquake hits heavily against anything bar those Flying types. Onix doesn't have the most brilliant Attack, but it's coverage is good enough. Screech and Bind to bring any troublesome, slower, Pokémon into low HP, then hit them with either Rock Slide or Earthquake for the finishing blow. | |
Location? | |
Onix can be found between Levels 13 and 15 in the Rock Tunnel, learning Bind at Level 15. Bring a Pokémon that can learn Flash though, or an Escape Rope in case you get too deeply in. |

Great job on this! Honestly, even though the level 20 Alakazam can pretty much take both rounds by itself, the recommendations are really good here. c:
Neither Shellder nor Cloyster can learn Body Slam
Clefable also cannot learn SurfPost Your Comments
