General Pokémon Discussion / Re: Mispronounced Pokémon
« on: December 16, 2014, 16:05 »
Hm, am I the only one who always mispronounces Sceptile? I always pronounce it with a soft 'c', (as in scepter)... the animated series taught me I was pronouncing it wrong, and I have decided that whoever decides official pronunciations should be fired as my way sounds way better.

1. Sneasel
I don't like Weavile, don't know why. Sneasel always just seemed like it had the potential to be cute but was also a cold-hearted killer (back when Beat Up was its signature move)

2. Raikou
Seems lots of people have a bunch of legends on their list, but I think Raikou is the only one I'd ever count as a favorite...

3. Empoleon
It's an emperor penguin with a sweet type combo. So hoping next gen (or next remake) it gets a mega evolution.

Debate / Re: Modern Democracy - Is it really all that good?
« on: December 16, 2014, 15:51 »
A three or more party system hasn't proven itself particularly more effective though - you can see that in Canada, where minority governments have been disturbingly more common in my lifetime with extremely negative results - a government afraid of its own shadow, afraid to make any real decisions for fear of triggering another election so instead simply 'holding on' until the winds of public opinion are in their favor. What else would you expect from a politician? In the US, this 'party lines' rule is less strictly enforced, but the party maintains the authority to pull funding which effectively cripples prospective members. They can then run as an independent and that does them wonders getting re-elected in their home district, but effectively curbs their power influencing federal and even state politics.

In my experience, however limited it may be, a two party system has serious flaws in that it lacks any real semblance of democracy, but having more parties only creates governments afraid to act at all for fear of losing their precarious grip on power. Nor do coalition governments seem to be the answer - for examples there, look at Israel. Having a wide range of parties seems to result in the largest ones being the furthest extremes from one another. To gain power, a coalition between opposite extremes happens as well, but the end result is not amicable - someone ends up sacrificing their values, and political compromise is not something that lasts.

Gaming / Re: What Games are you playing right now?
« on: December 16, 2014, 08:00 »
Been playing a lot of AC: Unity, and bought Far Cry 4 and Dragon Age Inquisition but Pokemon kind of took over. In the next couple of days I'll probably start into Inquisition for real.

Debate / Modern Democracy - Is it really all that good?
« on: December 16, 2014, 06:45 »
I used to talk about this kind of stuff all the time in college, so figured after reading a few of the other debate posts from last year, it might be worth raising a question (rather than reviving dead topics). Is Democracy really all it's cracked up to be?

I see a common sentiment that people think the US (and by extension perhaps the entire western world) is full of closed-minded, media-fueled intellectual black holes incapable of bringing any level of understanding to the rest of the world. But spending four years studying politics instead shows me that the United States' actions in the global community are hardly driven by common public interest, and instead the interests of wealthy politicians abusing a system they've learned to manipulate. Young people - the 20-somethings of the world - have no real shot at higher office due to the lack of realistic financing to compete with these politicians driven by radical agendas and lobbyist promises. Getting voted in as anything more than a member of the house is a pipe dream for most, and even that is unlikely at best.

I live in Canada and see a few of the same problems regarding foreign policy (albeit our social policy is far more reasonable). It just seems to beg the question, is this really the best system of government the world has to offer? People sacrificing their own principles and ideals for the funding required to 'play the game' so to speak, with the end results being only what major corporations (and by extension, politicians practically on their payroll)  can make some profit from?

Random Randomness / Re: The three line "How ya doin'" topic
« on: December 15, 2014, 21:50 »
I have to wrap Christmas presents today and I really am not in the Christmas spirit, too much bad stuff this past few months to be even remotely positive. Not to mention that wrapping paper is like, my worst enemy ever. And my gifts are mostly too big and heavy to put in bags. Sigh.

Random Randomness / Re: Your Heritage
« on: December 15, 2014, 21:42 »
Let's see... grandfather's family was early settlers in Canada from Germany, but I don't know the stock they married into, so probably a bajillion things now. Dads side all came from central Canada and the farthest non-Canadian we can trace is Irish, but there's a ton of other stuff in there too somewhere. Probably just an amalgam of everything under the sun, really.

Music / Re: Which songs are you currently obsessed with?
« on: December 09, 2014, 16:08 »
My alarm ringtone is currently the last version of the Doctor Who theme used before Capaldi's tenure began, and that does the trick. That doo-wee-ooo wakes me up every time.

Though that's not the topic, is it? Honestly, there's a whole playlist of songs I am constantly listening to on Spotify, and it's the Smash Hits of the 80's list. Don't know why, but nearly half of the songs on that list are ones that I find myself humming randomly when things are quiet.

I stand corrected. I wouldn't do that myself though, since I feel the point of these games is to experience playing with the Hoenn Pokémon. It's a nostalgia thing.

Perhaps slightly off topic, but as an aside - National Dex Pokemon can appear in-game before you actually get the National Dex, and I don't just mean in Victory Road. I was breeding Electrike to get one with a nature that didn't hurt SpA or Speed (I was bored of grinding low-level team additions) and when I was done, I went on Wonder Trade to dispense of the Lv1 Electrikes, and got some nationalmon in return (of course). The relevance? I suspect obtaining nationaldex Pokemon triggers something in-game, because by the time I got to Lilycove, I'd caught both Aipom and Elgyem from the route just prior, right outside the safari zone, via PokeNav.

Say Hello! / Re: Howdy Folks
« on: December 06, 2014, 23:19 »
Hey, welcome to the site WB ^^

I'm Dick, I'm from the Lande of Angles (or England to normal people xD). I'm still baffled by the fact every canadian person I know is like crazy levels of nice, do you just like not have grumpy people xD Anyways, I'm just gonna leave it there because it's like 22:30, so yeah, hope you stick around ^^

I'm very grumpy for a Canadian, maybe not by other standards, but I do tend to be a bit grumpy. Maybe because I'm always tired? Oh well. At least I'm polite about it!

have you tried using a different chat client?  the default mibbit works fine for me so i can't name any good ones but i know there's a good few members who could give you a list and a lowdown of different clients.

and as i haven't done this:  hi! i'm alice and i'm 5'2 and from england, and it's great to have you here etc etc

I know of a few clients as well, but I don't know the actual channel for the site, which poses a problem. I'll try in a different browser first, and if that doesn't work I'll poke around. Also, thanks for the greeting from across the pond!

Hurrah, more Canadians! I'm pretty sure we're not invading, but to be fair, every one of us is about as awesome as a million Americans, so on that basis, in the context of a Pokemon site, we are flooding the site with awesome. Which I imagine isn't a bad thing.

And a Newfie, too! (Nova Scotian here.) Go maritime provinces! I'm not too big on the roleplaying scene anymore, just haven't done it in a few years and don't much care for it the way I once did. I'll likely spend most of my time with ORAS and X-Y stuff.

Also, I'm pretty sure your chat doesn't like me. It likes to pretend it's loading while I sit and stare for a while. Either that or a plugin isn't up to date and I'm too lazy to fix it.

Say Hello! / Howdy Folks
« on: December 06, 2014, 14:37 »
Howdy! I'm Winterbane, or WB for short. Been going by his handle for... a while now. A loooong while. 9? 10 years now? I used to go by Moogle until I kind of fell out of love with Square Enix (shortly after the "enix" bit came into existence). Somebody or other around here might know me, I used to administrate somewhere else Pokemon related, but then I left. Anyway, I found PKMN.net when Google searching nicknames for Pokemon when I was stumped and unhappy with my current ones, only to be left happy with them after becoming distracted by the resident Name Rater here. Saw the forums and figured hey, these folks seem pretty okay. Might as well join so I can stop living under an online rock.

I've been playing Pokemon since Yellow Version, have played most of the earlier spin-off titles (kind of lost touch with those around the same time as Conquest came out). In Gen III I got into competitive battling with a couple of friends who I lost touch with once I was in high school, and in Gen IV I dabbled online with competitive battling, which I continued into the fifth gen. Sixth gen I slipped a bit with the competitive play, if only due to lack of time to actually raise anything. I however do make liberal use of wonder trade for my random breeding project babies that are less than optimum.

I used to moderate (and then admin) a pokemon roleplaying site, then a text-based Pokemon RPG site (with a lot less roleplaying), and for the past year or so ish I've been effectively off the grid.

What else to know about me, that isn't in my profile... I'm 25, Canadian, like cold weather (but not snow and ice), and my favorite color is blue.

Oh. I do a lot of tabletop roleplaying with my not-Pokemon friends, who are also in general not-Nintendo friends. I play Pathfinder, have played Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 and 4th Ed, still play New World of Darkness (which is my favorite), and currently play a lot of the new Fantasy Flight Star Wars games (currently playing the beta of Force and Destiny with my regular crew.) I'm always up to talk this stuff, it's probably the most fun thing ever that isn't video games (and actually beats a lot of them).

I love science fiction in general, with a few exception, and I work nights, so I'm around all night on my nights off, and awake in the evenings and early mornings in my time zone. I think that just about sums it up! Nice to meet y'all.
