RESIGNATION
« on: February 07, 2010, 20:22 »
Members of PKMN.NET,

As you will likely notice by the time you read this, I am no longer a staff member on this site and forums. Because this is a big step, I'd like to say a few things to explain myself and hopefully prevent needless speculation.

First, I'm sure this decision will come as a surprise to many, but it is something that has been approaching for a while. The site work had stopped being fun for me and has turned into a job of sorts that entailed a lot of responsibilities, dealing with abuse and taking on more work solely because I'm the only who'd do it, while my time was and is becoming more limited. At work I get paid for it, yet here I've needed to accept more for no gain for me.

The past year has amplified that, where I still find myself often being singled out for bad decisions made together, with apologies intended for all being received by and seen by someone else, without me ever getting any apologies. There has only been one, which I still appreciate. That person knows who I'm talking about and how much it meant.

Because my workload is still sizeable - more than other staff put in at this point in time - work on the site has already become stressful, and the opinions and personalities of other people on the site - both staff and normal members - have been clashing more often. All of that has changed my view of the site such that more often, the work that needs to be done is a chore I'm not willing to do considering what the return is for it. It's unpaid work that doesn't benefit me in any other way, except that I get grief for it whether I do something right or not or even when I don't do it. I've often felt I'm expected to put in the amount of work expected for a salaried job in my free time.

This has created friction and a lot of recent discussions have, in part, centered on this. This has been combined with the issue of care for the site. In a sense, I care for it deeply. I want it to do well and I want to see it improve. Many of you probably doubt this, but those I've worked with can confirm that. That's the reason why I was willing to do more - because it would benefit the site. People didn't always help me there, I feel, sometimes organising things behind my back that should be shared (and that I would have shared) when my opinion on the matter differed.

These discussions and arguments have been distracting me a lot, to the point where they've been affecting my personal life and health and intruded too far to matter. I'm proud of what I've helped create with the site and want it to do well, but the direction others want it to go on make it seem like that is threatened sometimes, and that hurts a lot.

Because of all the controversy created, I've decided to step back. Doing so means that I can focus on other things and other people that are more important to me and give me something back. More than I can get here now. Things I enjoy. Because PKMN.NET, you're not that. And maybe, if my influence is such a bad one on the site that it causes constant issues, then it might be better for the site's sake as well to let it go.

I can't say anything about the future of the site. After this I'm dropping all staff business, so server maintenance, code writing and updating, admin discussion organisation and all else I did will need to go to others. I don't know who that will be or who could manage, or how this will affect the site. As of right now, that's not my problem.

Rejoice, you who think I should have gone a long time ago. You won your pyrrhic victory. I hope you will enjoy it long enough. I hope it will benefit my 'baby' in the end.

well jeroen, i'm one of the people who have wanted you off for a long long time.  and i've openly expressed it.  but frankly, i do appreciate the work you've put into the site, just not necessarily your attitude.  And even while this resignation has happened, i still have this sort of have this heavy feeling -- not one of joy or sadness, necessarily.

but prioritizing your health and personal life over this site's life -- that's the way to go.  and i applaud you for that.

in some ways, i am sorry.

as much as i disliked jeroen's time as an administrator -- i honestly think it's disrespectful that it's turning into a joke thread.

oh yeah guys, Rob stepped back.  just an fyi.  he just did it silently.
