My TV is being stupid

When I turn on the TV and DVD player on in my room, it has a blank screen and no audio. I tried changing channels, both by pressing the remote and buttons on the TV, but it's not changing. The batteries aren't dead. I pushed the plug in the DVD player and TV, nothing.

Why is this happening? And I'm getting an Xbox tomorrow.  This is my TV.

I tried googling why my TV screen is black (no racism intended!) but it would really help if I knew what kind of TV it was (other than an old one!

And I don't have the money to buy a new one (or any money at all tbh)

yo name master as a CRT (the type of tv you have) haver myself in tyool 2016 i can understand The Struggle. been playing any console games (old xbox, snes emulators et al., too poor for anything past 6th gen consoles apart from like, the old wii. and a 3ds) on this crappy blurry crt with minor rotational Problems via a Complicated Wire setup and its frederick h crappy at the best of times. on the plus side i whittle away less of my life on videogames if any so thats a plus. 

and i guess the strife will be worth it in the end when i FINALLY have money to get a nice flatscreen like literally everyone else has these days. whenever that is. those things are like £400+ just for entry level ones and i got a lot of other more important things to pay for first. sigh.



ANYWAY Poor People Solidarity aside just outta curiosity have you got any cables going into it and are we talking SCART cable or RCA?

also if/when you turn it on is there any signs of Life at all? like the high pitched CRT-turning-on sound? the little red power light doing anything? or just nothing?


first thought w.r.t. it being Dead As Hell would be gettin an adult to check the fuse on the plug itself, and replace it if neccessary. coulda been a power surge or s/t in a storm or whatever and the fuse coulda blown.

which channel changing button is broke????

if its anything like ours and if the AV button is busted you may need a New Remote if you can afford it. try to get either the same model or a 'replacement model' based on the type (theres all sorts of dumb IR standards w/ remotes so you gotta be careful to get one that Works). type the remote model number into ebay or amazon or w/e.


cos what it'll be is anything plugged into the SCART will be on the AV channel which you can't get to with normal channel up/down. which is dumb from an Accessibility point of view but there u go.




the logo looks a bit like this on the remote if it ain't labelled as AV



little box with a arrow going in/out of it. changes based on whichever remote/tv you have but it'll be there on most remotes and on my tv you usually have to get to AV2 before anything shows up (i got an incredibly hackjob'd media centre made out of my old PC and a bunch of spliced wires and ubuntu gnome on AV2 and ive wrangled it so the wii is on AV1. ghetto and proud.).





you'll be seeing all black on normal channels cos its just not picking anything up at all b/c thats where your normal TV channels would be i.e. bbc1, bbc2, itv, etc etc except you'll be seeing nothing cos

a) no aerial attached and b) analogue tv channels (the ones CRT tvs like yours/mine do) were shut off WAY back in 2001 and its all digiboxes and flatscreens for the lucky majority now.

anyway see if you can get it on the AV channel via buttons on the tv/etc. or a New Remote if that fails and see if that works.

The left and right button rises/lowers the volume, and the up/down buttons change channel.



Those up/ down arrows change channel.

the little symbol above the yellow button (av symbol) might be what you need. idk if you need to press another button to get a secondary thing like on scientific calculators?????

Well.... it.... err..... does something....

When I press it, I get this screen (with the thing still in the corner)



Then when I press it again, it goes back to the black screen.

this is with the dvd player on and everything right??? try turning it off and on again while the black n white snowstorm thing is on the screen. wiggle the scart cable about and see if anything happens

what sorta tv? did you leave the CRT club and become the Flatscreen TV Having club? hopefully it at least works with the xbox if nothing else

Lol my brother is terrible! He's given me a tv without a remote (so I can't turn it on!) an xbox without all the necessary wires (I have two of the same wires that I don't think I need, because the TV doesn't have HD) and two batteries.

Apparently, he left a dvd in the dvd player that's on the TV. I wonder what he's been watching? (hopefully it's not porn!)

I had to stand almost with my back to the door to fit it all in! Lmao

I just not sure why my brother is giving me 18+ games to play.....
