What are the worst sprites in R/B/Y for you?

Pidgey?



Is this even a pidgey??? Looks nothing like a pidgey!

Spearow



Well, if you thought that pidgey was bad, just wait till you see spearow! To say the least, it is sooo bad!

Kakuna



Kakuna has..... Arms?

Nidoran female



What is this hideous thing???

Koffing



How can you get the face and the markings the wrong way round??? Come on, Nintendo!

Golbat



Of all the things you put in gen 1, it had to be golbat's tongue, didn't it?

Paras



What is this?

Gastly



A guy asked me "what does this look like?" expecting me to awnser "gastly" he was so disappointed when I awnsered "just a face over a pile of randomly scattered pixels"

A have a few comments on your list:

I disagree on Machop, paras and pidgey, as the former looks really good for the time, and the latter looks like a real bird, which is probably what they were going for. Paras actually should look like that because of what it's based off of, that mushroom is taking over its brain, and it can be seen with its evolution, parasect (the eyes are fully white)

However, I fully agree on Gastly and Golbat. Gastly looks like something i'd have nightmares about if I just had 5 things of purple pixie stick powder, and golbat is laughably bad.

Going slightly off topic into gen 2, Croconaw, Feraligatr and spinarak were the wrong colour in gold and silver







When I started playing pokemon gold, I encountered a Spinarak, thinking it was shiny. A quick Google search resulted in disappointment....

I love Feraligatr's sprite, but I agree, I think the spriters and Ken Sugimori weren't on the same page for G/S/C.



Like, they didn't put the four pointed star on his face, got the cape wrong, didn't put those horn things on, etc. they fixed it in crystal, but my lord.

Have you seen the Pokemon Green sprites though? They're out of control.

The main problem with this sprite is that it's unfinished. Game Freak forgot to draw in the mirror that Exeggutor is looking at. That would've explained why it looks so scared.

I was going to say Exeggutor's sprite was bad, but you beat me to it!

tbf whilst some of those are pretty bad, as well as some others, quite a few Gen I sprites are the best the Pokémon have ever looked, and at least they look more mysterious and monster-ish too.



even some that don't particularly look polished like Gyarados, Dragonite, Kingler, Hitmonlee, a few others too; they look so menacing and look like they have personality. For all of the problems Gen I had, and the lack of resources available, it really does make Pokémon look and feel special

The sprite isn't bad (it isn't good either) but the colouration isn't very good. And what is going on with it's teeth?

I think sometimes in yellow, they were trying too hard to make it look like the anime which made them look even more crappy. Some were good and better though.

Also, why are some pokemon coloured Brown in yellow?

I refer to RB Koffing as Upside Down. Exeggcutor looked pretty bad as well.
