How can I get my mum to understand anything I say to her?

I'm having issues with my mum again. Basically, what I want to do is make Youtube videos without copyrighted content (ie. adverts, tv shows, movies, songs, etc.) in the background.

So basically, whenever she goes out shopping or something, we have a conversation that goes something like this:

Mum: I'm going out
Me: Ok, just don't leave the TV on like you always do
Mum: Why not?
Me: Because I want to make Youtube videos and I can't have copyrighted content playing in the background
Mum: Ok, I'll leave the TV on then!

Why does she do this? Is she just not paying proper attention to what I say or is she just being plain ignorant?
What can I do about it?

There is a chance that she can mishear you, a small one, but there is the chance. Either that or there's a deeper meaning to this. I'd go with the former and that she's just mishearing you.

Yeah, there is that. She does it a little too often to be a coincidence though.

she's probably being an ignoramus

There is also this. When my mum and dad have conversations with each other, she will completely forget about the conversation about 2 minutes after it finishes and she will act as though the conversation never even happened. She will frequently have arguments with my dad saying that they never had the conversation in the first place. Was she just ignoring my dad the whole time?

I wish I could, especially when she gets into her "he said he said he said" habit. What she does is she will talk about someone she bumped into while out, then she will start telling me what he told her.

"He said he was going to the shops, and he said he was going to buy a carton of milk, and he said that he was going to invite a few friends to his house, and he said his wife passed away a couple of days ago, and he said....." it goes on and on! This is just an example.

I tell my mum to stop overusing "he said" as she is referring to the same person the whole time and she acts as though she is completely unaware she is doing it. She then tells me off for pointing out her mistakes as she believes she isn't making any!

My mum is driving me insane nowadays!

I often wonder if this is a sign of dementia or something.

Have you talked to your mom about how you're making YouTube videos and their content? She could be leaving the TV on not to spite you or because she didn't hear, but rather because she's concerned about you putting yourself in the public like that.
I'll tell you this right now: your parents will never stop looking at you like their little girl. I've got a degree in Physics and my mom still insists on taking 5 minutes to explain the apparently complex process of seperating rotten lemons from fresh ones.

My advice would be to discuss what you're doing on your YouTube channel, show her you're not putting a lot of/any personal information that could cause trouble, and perhaps compromise: give her a basic outline of what you plan to do to show her you're not telling the public your address and what not. If you're just showing gameplay (competetive Pokémon battles for example) or How-To videos (drawing, repairing sinks, etc.) then she's more likely to acknowledge your requests for her to turn the TV off.

Of course, you could also just put the TV on mute.

Am I missing something or can't you just turn the TV off or mute it if she's going out?

I guess I didn't mention that. We have a few different things with remotes in my house, I'm not sure which one the TV remote is. I don't want to accidentally turn off the Freeview box if my dad is recording something.

maybe you could ask one of your parents to explain what each remote is and label them as such so that you always know from now on and can turn it off when your mother forgets to/refuses to

^And it seems like your dad may be the one to ask here.

I'll definitely ask my dad to help me figure out how everything in the house works, it would certainly make things a lot easier.
