Ash and his friends are heading for the Cinnabar Gym. Ash will have to fight other trainers along the way. He was fighting some other trainer, who sent a Rhyhorn. Ash sends Bulbasaur. The other trainer tells Rhyhorn to use Take Down. The ground shakes as it charges and Pikachu starts freaking out. Ash tells Bulbasaur to use Leech Seed, but the Rhyhorn crashes into it and Bulbasaur goes flying. Ash tries to bring it back, but it refuses! Brock says that it won't until it wins. The other trainer says Ash must be a pretty lousy trainer if his Pokémon don't listen to him. Rhyhorn charges again. Bulbasaur uses Razor Leaf, stopping it. Then it spins it around with Vine Whip. Rhyhorn collapses and Ash wins. The guy says he's trained his Bulbasaur well. Misty says all of Ash's Pokémon are stubborn, just like him. Ash sees that Bulbasaur is having a hard time getting up. The bulb on its back starts glowing.

They rush Bulbasaur to a Pokémon Center. Ash asks Nurse Joy to please save it. She says she'll do what she can and she and a Chansey wheel it into the ER. They pass a vase of flowers as they do, and they all suddenly bloom. Togepi sees and gets really happy. Joy hooks Bulbasaur to some machine and says that now she's positive. She tells Ash that it's not sick, it's getting ready to evolve. Brock says he isn't surprised as Bulbasaur is really strong. It will evolve into Ivysaur. Ash thinks that's great, but Bulbasaur overhears and doesn't seem very happy.

Ash asks how long it will be. They look out a window, where a bunch of flowers start blooming. Then they start sparkling. Joy says that once a year, Bulbasaur from around the world gather for their evolution festival. It's always at a different time of the year. They say it has something to do with the allignment of the planets and the phases of the moon. Misty asks where they go and Joy responds 'The Mysterious Garden'. No humans have ever seen it before. Misty says it must be out there. Ash says he wants to see it. Bulbasaur hears and again doesn't look too thrilled.

A long line of Bulbsasaur are walking through the forest. Everyone is asleep at the Pokémon Center. Bulbasaur is leaving and Pikachu wakes up and sees. Pikachu follows Bulbasaur outside, who is following the trail of sparkles. They stop on a hill, then they talk, or maybe they're arguing. Suddenly, a bunch of vines come out of the forest, and grab Bulbasaur. It's a bunch of other Bulbasaur. They start walking away, holding Bulbasaur in their vines. Pikachu can't stop them, so he goes and wakes up Ash and the others, and they follow him.

Enter Team Rocket! Jessie likes all the sparkly pollen stuff. She says it's dreamy and makes her feel like a princess. James disagrees: He has allergies. Meowth says they have a job to do: Steal that Pikachu! Suddenly, they walk right past that big group of Bulbasaur holding Ash's Bulbasaur. Jessie says they should capture them, but the Bulbasaur all hit them with their vines and they blast off again.

Ash and the others are following Pikachu. Right after they leave an area, Team Rocket lands. They say those Bulbasaur will pay for what they did!

Brock says if they follow the trail of pollen, they might find Bulbasaur. Suddenly the roots of a bunch of tree start thrashing around and a bunch of vines start blocking their path. Ash says they won't stop and they dive through them just in time. Brock says he understands why no one has ever seen the Mysterious Garden before. Pikachu runs ahead and points. It's the Mysterious Garden with hundreds of Bulbasaur! They're all chanting, gathered around a really, really big tree, which starts growing larger. The sparkly pollen hits the tree and flowers on it start blooming. Suddenly, the large opening in the tree starts glowing and something big comes out.

It's a Venusaur! It gets on a big tree stump. Ash's Pokédex says how Venusaur gets its energy from the suns rays. Brock says that makes it sound like a plant. They spot Ash's Bulbasaur because it has the bandage on its head. Ash tries calling out to it, but Brock stops him, reminding him that humans have never been here before. All the Bulbasaur except Ash's are really happy about evolving. They all start glowing!

Team Rocket can't get through the wall of vines. James asks Meowth to Scratch his way through and Meowth says he just had his claws filed. Jessie and James get out an axe and a saw. But the vines attack them and chase them away.

The Bulbasaur evolve into Ivysaur! Brock says that people have always disagreed wether Bulbasaur and Ivysaur were plants or animals. He says that maybe Bulbasaur are a symbol that all life on Earth is connected. Ash points out that his Bulbasaur hasn't evolved. Brock says it looks like it's trying not to. The Venusaur yells at it and all the Ivysaur start getting mad. The Venusaur is about to hit Bulbasaur with its Vine Whip, but Ash blocks it just in time.

Misty wonders if they're mad at them now. Ash says he's sorry for coming to their festival. Bulbasaur is his friend. He asks if they're mad that Bulbasaur won't evolve and they nod. Ash says that if Bulbasaur doesn't want to, they can't force it to evolve! A bunch of pollen comes from the flower on Venusaur's back and goes on the tree, causing it to grow more. Misty says it's manipulating nature. If Bulbasaur evolves, it could do that too. It still refuses.

Enter Team Rocket again! Now they're coming in their balloon. They say their lines, then James activates the machine. Another vacuum! It starts sucking up all the Ivysaur and putting them into a big blue bag. Venusaur manages to grab some with its vines, but they increase the vacuum's power and Venusaur begins to be pulled upward. Ash tells Pikachu to use Thunder, but Misty says it might hurt the Venusaur. Suddenly Pikachu starts to be pulled away, but Bulbasaur grabs it just in time and gives it to Ash.

Bulbasaur tries using Razor Leaf, but it fails. James asks if they should get Bulbasaur and Jessie and Meowth just laugh, saying Bulbasaur is a wimp. Ash and Bulbasaur get really mad. Bulbasaur shouts and the sun suddenly rises over the horizon! The sun's ray enter through the opening in the top of the bulb in Bulbasaur's back. Dexter says it's getting ready to use Solar Beam! Ash tells it to get ready. The bulb glows and a huge, blue beam of energy shoots out, hitting the balloon. The balloon explodes and Bulbasaur frees all the Ivysaur with Razor Leaf.

Team Rocket falls to the ground in the basket. All the Pokemon are really, really mad. They hit Team Rocket all at once with their vines and they go flying for the second time this episode! Ash says Bulbsaur did great. Venusaur agrees. It and Bulbasaur shake hands, er, vines.

Ash and the others leave. They notice that the garden has dissapeared. They wave goodbye to Venusaur and Ivysaur.
